Bonus Proficiencies
When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain proficiency in three of the following skills of your choice: Acrobatics, Athletics,
Investigation, Medicine, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival. You can choose to gain proficiency with thieves' tools in place of one
skill choice.
Combat Superiority
At 3rd level, you gain a set of abilities that are fueled by special dice called superiority dice.
Superiority Dice. You have four superiority dice, which are d8s. A superiority die is expended when you use it. You regain all of your
expended superiority dice when you finish a long or short rest. You gain another superiority die at 7th level and one more at 15th level.
Using Superiority Dice. You can expend superiority dice to gain a number of different benefits:
When you make a check that allows you to apply your proficiency in Athletics, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival, you can expend
one superiority die to bolster the check. Add half the number rolled on the superiority die (rounding up) to your check. You apply this
bonus after making the check but before learning if it was successful.
When you make a weapon attack against a creature, you can expend one superiority die to add it to the attack roll. You can use this
ability before or after making the attack roll, but before any of the effects of the attack are applied.
If you are hit by an attack while wearing light or medium armor, you can expend one superiority die as a reaction, adding the number
rolled to your AC. If the attack still hits, you take half damage from it.
Natural Explorer (Mountain)
You are particularly familiar with one type of natural environment and are adept at traveling and surviving in such regions. Choose one
type of favored terrain: arctic, coast, desert, forest, grassland, mountain, swamp, or the Underdark. When you make an Intelligence or
Wisdom check related to your favored terrain, your proficiency bonus is doubled if you are using a skill that you're proficient in.
While traveling for an hour or more in your favored terrain, you gain the following benefits:
Difficult terrain doesn't slow your group's travel.
Your group can't become lost except by magical means.
Even when you are engaged in another activity while traveling (such as foraging, navigating, or tracking), you remain alert to danger.
If you are traveling alone, you can move stealthily at a normal pace.
When you forage, you find twice as much food as you normally would.
While tracking other creatures, you also learn their exact number, their sizes, and how long ago they passed through the area.
You choose additional favored terrain types at 7th and 15th level.

Tor Rivenshield's Archery proficiency bonus combined with his natural explorer abilities in mountainous terrain creates a potent blend for tactical movement and combat efficiency. The +2 bonus to attack rolls with ranged weapons elevates his effectiveness in skirmishes, allowing him to maintain a distance and pick off enemies accurately, which is crucial in the open visibility that mountainous regions often provide . His natural explorer abilities further enhance his advantage in such environments, ensuring his group doesn't become lost and difficult terrain does not impede their travel . These skills also allow him to remain alert to danger and move stealthily alone at a normal pace, giving him the upper hand in surprise attacks or evasive maneuvers. However, these strengths are terrain dependent, and their maximum potential is only realized within mountainous regions, limiting their efficacy in other types of environments.

Tor Rivenshield's dual identity as a Fighter and Outlander creates synergies that make him a versatile and invaluable asset during a campaign. As a Fighter, he possesses combat-focused abilities such as the Archery bonus, which increases his effectiveness with ranged weapons , and features like Second Wind and Action Surge that provide additional actions and resilience in combat . His Outlander background complements these abilities by ensuring that he and his party can navigate the wilderness effectively, find food and water, and benefit from his intimate knowledge of the terrain . As a result, Tor is capable of both leading the charge in battle and safeguarding his group outside of combat with valuable survival skills.

Tor Rivenshield's proficiency with tools and weapons is a direct synthesis of his Dwarven cultural heritage and personal experiences. He has Dwarven Combat Training that makes him proficient with battleaxes, handaxes, light hammers, and warhammers, reflecting traditional Dwarven weaponry expertise . His tool proficiency with Smith's tools, brewer's supplies, or mason's tools demonstrates cultural aspects of craftsmanship and resourcefulness typical among Dwarves . Additionally, his selection of the Outlander background instills an excellent memory for maps and geography, vital for survival in wilderness settings . Consequently, Tor's martial and practical skills are shaped by his heritage, which emphasizes both intricate weapon handling and practical survival skillsets, enriched by his personal experiences in the adventuring life.

Tor Rivenshield's use of superiority dice allows for enhanced tactical flexibility during combat. At 3rd level, he gains a set of superiority dice, which are d8s that can be expended for various benefits . These dice enable him to bolster checks involving Athletics, Nature, Perception, Stealth, or Survival, adding half the number rolled to the check . Additionally, he can enhance his weapon attacks by expending a superiority die to add it to the attack roll, potentially turning misses into hits . Furthermore, when wearing light or medium armor, he can use a superiority die to increase his AC as a reaction against incoming attacks, reducing potential damage by half if the attack still hits . This multifaceted usage of superiority dice enhances his combat effectiveness by allowing him to adapt to different battle conditions and optimize his actions to maximize tactical advantages.

The superiority dice mechanic influences Tor Rivenshield's decision-making by providing him with flexible options to improve combat effectiveness. When engaging in combat, Tor can choose to expend superiority dice to add additional points to attack rolls, which can influence whether he decides to take a high-risk attack or a defensive strategy . The ability to boost his AC as a reaction with a superiority die allows him to assess the likelihood of taking significant damage and opt for defensive maneuvers if necessary . This system necessitates careful consideration of when to use these dice for optimal outcomes, allowing for both offensive and defensive tactical adjustments. The potential to enhance skill checks outside of immediate combat also broadens how Tor can react to a variety of scenarios, requiring strategic allocation of these resources.

As the clan elder and Huntmaster, Tor Rivenshield's responsibilities shape his personal motivations and his interactions with the environment. His position requires him to uphold the Rivenshield clan's code and ensure that hunts are conducted honorably . In combat, Dwarven Combat Training grants him proficiency with the battleaxe, handaxe, light hammer, and warhammer, broadening his weapon options . Moreover, the Archery bonus (+2 to attack rolls with ranged weapons) enhances his combat effectiveness . These advantages significantly boost his combat and survival capabilities, allowing him to navigate various terrains and withstand environmental threats effectively.

Tor Rivenshield's Outlander background grants him excellent memory for maps and geography, enabling him to recall terrain, settlements, and other features, which is crucial for navigation . This resilience allows him to act as a frontline protector during encounters with creatures or environments that utilize poison. In group dynamics, this role means he can lead charges into hazardous areas where others might hesitate, relying on his durability to secure advantages or retreat on behalf of the group if needed, fostering a greater sense of security among his companions.

Tor Rivenshield's ability to forage for food and water is crucial for group sustainability during extended campaigns away from civilization. As an Outlander, he can find sustenance for himself and up to five others daily, provided the terrain yields resources like berries and small game . This capability ensures the group's survival without relying on ration supplies, allowing for prolonged excursions in remote areas. Strategically, his foraging ability facilitates continuous movement and exploration, reducing downtime and logistical constraints tied to supply acquisition. It underscores his indispensable role in maintaining the well-being of the group while also freeing resources for other essential campaign needs, such as equipment repair or medical attention, potentially leading to strategic advantages during prolonged engagements or explorations.
