• The visible universe , which includes the Earth , the Sun, stars, and galaxies made up of
atoms , accounts for less than 5 % of the mass of the universe .
• The rest of the universe consists of mysterious invisible substances called dark matter
(about 25%) and gravity-repelling dark energy (about 70 %) .
Dark Matter:
• It is made up of particles that have no charge, that is, they do not interact with each other
through electromagnetic interaction.
• These are the particles that are ' dark ' Because they do not emit light . which is an
electromagnetic phenomenon , and ' matter ' Because they have mass like normal matter
and so interact with each other through gravity.
• Dark matter does not interact with electromagnetic forces and neither absorbs nor emits
light , making it extremely difficult to detect. Scientists study it through its effects on visible
objects.
Dark Energy :
• Dark energy is a theoretical form of energy that produces a negative and repulsive force
that acts in the opposite direction to gravity.
• It is thought to be responsible for the observed rapid expansion of the universe. It is thought
to be responsible for accelerating the expansion rate of the universe over time rather than
slowing it down.

The Aditya-L1 mission aims to provide a comprehensive study of the Sun by examining the photosphere, chromosphere, and corona to understand solar activities, including coronal mass ejections and solar flares. It carries seven payloads to study these aspects and aims to improve space weather forecasting. This mission is significant as it enhances our understanding of solar magnetic storms and their effects on the Earth's environment, contributing to better predictive models for solar-induced changes in space weather .

Lagrange Point 1 is crucial for solar observation as it offers a stable position where gravitational forces between the Earth and the Sun are balanced. This location provides an uninterrupted view of the Sun, making it an ideal spot for missions like NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory and ISRO's Aditya-L1 mission. By placing a satellite at this point, continuous solar monitoring is possible, aiding in the study of solar activities and their impact on space weather .

Venus is often called Earth's twin due to its similar mass, size, and density. However, its atmosphere is hostile, comprising mainly carbon dioxide, creating an extreme greenhouse effect with surface temperatures hotter than any other planet in the Solar System. Understanding Venus's atmospheric conditions and planetary dynamics is crucial for comparative planetary science. ISRO's delayed Shukrayaan-1 mission aims to study these factors, providing insights into similar processes that might have occurred on Earth .

The NISAR mission, a collaboration between NASA and ISRO, aims to map the Earth's surface with unprecedented detail using L-band and S-band synthetic aperture radar. Anticipated outcomes include improved understanding of dynamic Earth processes such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and landslides; monitoring of wave heights and sea level changes; and enhanced insights into vegetation and ice changes. The radar's ability to detect surface changes as small as a centimeter will contribute to climate research and disaster response efficiency .

The Kessler Syndrome describes a scenario where the density of objects in low Earth orbit could cause a cascade of collisions, generating more debris and significantly increasing the risk to satellites and space missions. This poses a severe threat to the usability of near-Earth space for future missions, necessitating improved debris management and international cooperation for sustainable space activities and the mitigation of collision risks .

The Moon's South Pole is targeted for exploration due to its rugged and uncharted environment, which holds the potential for new discoveries. There is evidence of water in permanently shadowed craters, which is vital for future lunar missions and can contribute to understanding the early Solar System. Additionally, the extreme cold preserves materials that provide information about the Solar System's history .

ISRO's development of the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) presents challenges such as higher initial design complexity and development costs compared to traditional expendable launch systems. The RLV combines the operational aspects of both a launch vehicle and an aircraft to enable component recycling, therefore requiring advances in materials science and engineering to withstand re-entry heat and stresses, as well as precision in landing technologies to ensure economic feasibility .

Gravitational lensing occurs when a massive object, like a galaxy or black hole, bends the light from objects behind it, effectively magnifying and distorting their appearance as predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity. This phenomenon allows astronomers to observe distant celestial bodies that would otherwise be too faint to see, providing crucial data on the distribution of dark matter and aiding the study of the universe's expansion by observing how light is affected by gravity over vast distances .

Tidal locking is crucial in understanding the Moon-Earth relationship as it refers to the synchronization between the Moon's rotational period and its orbit around the Earth due to gravitational forces. This results in only one side of the Moon always facing Earth. The phenomenon aids in stable synchronization, affecting the dynamics of the Earth's tides and moon phases .

Dark matter and dark energy challenge existing cosmological models by comprising most of the universe's mass-energy content, yet remaining undetected directly. Dark matter, making up about 25%, is thought to interact only gravitationally, while dark energy, responsible for 70%, is believed to drive the accelerated expansion of the universe. Researchers are deploying advanced observational facilities and theoretical models to better understand their properties and impacts on cosmic structure formation and evolution .
