Directions: Answer the following questions. Make sure to show all your work.
1. Answer questions (a – f) based on the following graph.
a. When x = -1, what is the value of y?
y=3
Continue on the following page.
b. When y = 7 , what is the value of x?
x=1
c. What is the y-intercept of the graph?
-2.5
d. What is the x-intercept of the graph?
=5
e. What is the slope of the line?
=-1.75
f. What is the equation of the line?
y = -1.75x - 2.5
2. The graph below shows how much money you have in savings each week. Use
this graph to answer questions (a – g).
Continue on the following page.
a. According to the graph how much money did you start with in your savings?
0,50 $50
b. How much money will you have after 5 weeks of saving?
(5, 175) $175.
c. Fill in the table at the right and Week Savings
extrapolate for weeks 6, 7 and 8.
1 y - 50 = 25
2 y = 25x + 50
3 y = 25x + 50
4 y = 25×8 + 50 =250
5 y = 25x + 50
6 y = 25×6 + 50 = 200
7 y = 25×7 + 50 = 225
8 y = 25×8 + 50 =250
d. How much money will you save after 10 weeks?
y = 25×10 + 50 = $300
e. How much money will you save after 15 weeks?
$425
f. How much money will you save after 20 weeks?
$1300
g. Write an equation for the line above.
y = 25x + 50

3. While surfing the Internet, you find a site that claims to offer “the most
popular and the cheapest DVDs anywhere.” Unfortunately, the website isn’t
clear about the how much they charge for each DVD, but it does give you the
following information:
Number of DVDs Ordered 1 2 3
Total Cost (includes S&H) $15 $24 $33
a. Plot the points and connect them to form a line.
b. What is the slope of the line containing the data points?
slope=$9
c. What does the slope represent in this problem?
$6 the fee
d. What is the y-intercept of the line that contains the data points?
(1, 15): 15 = 9(1) + b b = 6.
Continue on the following page.
e. What does the y-intercept represent in the context of this problem?
$6
f. Your friend says that he can get a dozen DVD’s from this website for $90.
Is he correct? Explain.
no he is wrong because
the total cost = 9x12 + 6 = 114. so it would be $114 not $90
g. How much would it cost to order 50 DVD’s from this website?
9x50 + 6 = 456
4. There is another website offering movies at a cost of $10 per DVD (including
S&H). Follow the same steps as in #3 in analyzing the cost for DVD’s. Plot the
data points, draw the line, and write an equation. Now compare the results
with those in #3.
points are (0,0), (1,10), (2,20), (3,30), (4,40)
Continue on the following page.
a. How do the graphs differ?
the first ones slope is higher
b. How many movies would you have to rent for the price to be exactly the
same at both sites?
9 and 10
c. What would be the price difference if you bought a dozen movies at each
site?
the first one is $114 and the second one would coast $121
