AIM OF THE COURSE

▪ To introduce students to the fundamental principles and


techniques used in conducting engineering surveying
▪ To perform engineering surveying tasks based on sound
principles and procedures

COURSE CONTENT
▪ This course is divided into five (5) lectures:
– Lecture 1: Introduction to engineering surveying
– Lecture 2: Methods for setting out engineering projects
– Lecture 3: Computation of areas and volumes for
earthworks
– Lecture 4: Mass-haul curves
– Lecture 5: Setting out of curves

OBJECTIVES
▪ Upon completion of GE 271 Engineering Surveying
students should be able to:
– Explain the fundamental principles of engineering surveying
– Use of surveying equipment to carry out engineering
surveying works like setting out of roads, structures, etc
– Carry out engineering surveying tasks base on proper
principles and procedures

REQUIREMENTS

▪ Prerequisite knowledge/skills required:


– Basic mathematics
– Use of survey instruments, e.g., Total stations,
Theodolites, Levels, etc.
– Survey methods, e.g., Traversing, leveling, detailing, etc
– Methods for processing and analysis of field data
– Computer skills and use of sofware like AutoCAD
– Independent and creative thinking
