ACTIVITY NO. 1: CONSTRUCTION METHODS AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT
1. What are the different specializations in civil engineering, and how is Construction
Management different from the rest?
Civil engineering has many branches. For instance, structural engineering focuses on designing
buildings and bridges to ensure stability, while geotechnical engineering deals with
understanding soil behavior to provide strong foundations. Transportation engineering works on
roads, highways, and other transportation networks, whereas environmental engineering
addresses pollution, waste management, and sustainability. Water resources engineering
manages systems like dams and pipelines. Construction Management is unique because it
emphasizes overseeing construction processes, including budgeting, scheduling, and team
supervision, rather than working on technical design.
2. What do you know about construction methods and project management?
Construction methods include both traditional practices, such as brickwork, and modern
techniques like prefabrication or modular construction, which improve efficiency. Green
methods, using sustainable and eco-friendly materials, are also becoming popular. Project
management ensures that construction runs smoothly by coordinating people, resources, and
schedules while keeping costs under control and ensuring that quality standards are met.
3. Have you ever worked on a construction site or been involved in a building project? If
so, what was your role and your experience?
During my OJT, I was responsible for monitoring workers to ensure they followed safety rules,
especially by wearing appropriate PPE like helmets, gloves, and boots. I also managed
inventory, ensuring that construction materials were properly recorded and available when
needed. This experience helped me understand the importance of maintaining safety,
organization, and communication in a real-world setting.
4. What do you think are the key responsibilities of a construction project manager?
A project manager in construction is responsible for creating detailed plans, ensuring that tasks
are completed on schedule, and managing the budget to prevent overspending. They must lead
the team effectively, address risks and challenges, communicate with clients and team
members, and verify that the project meets quality and safety standards.
5. What factors do you think contribute to delays in construction projects?
Construction delays are often caused by poor planning, changes in design after work has
started, or disruptions like bad weather. Other common reasons include shortages of materials,
delays in delivery, and a lack of skilled workers. Approval or inspection processes that take too
long can also lead to setbacks.
6. How important do you think teamwork and communication are in managing a
construction project?
Teamwork and communication are critical in construction projects because everyone involved
needs to work together to achieve the same objective. Clear communication ensures that
everyone understands their role, prevents mistakes, and resolves conflicts quickly, improving
overall efficiency.
7. What safety measures do you think are essential on a construction site?
Key safety measures include ensuring workers wear proper PPE, such as helmets and gloves,
and providing safety training to avoid accidents. Regular inspections of equipment, clear
warning signs for hazardous areas, and first aid readiness are also important for maintaining
safety on-site.
8. Can you think of any ethical issues that might arise in construction projects?
Ethical issues in construction can include accepting bribes, using inferior materials to cut costs,
ignoring safety rules, or paying workers unfairly. Environmental concerns, such as harming
ecosystems or avoiding regulations, are also common ethical challenges.
9. What do you think is the biggest safety risk in construction today?
The most significant risks in construction include falls from high places, accidents involving
heavy machinery, and exposure to electrical hazards. Addressing these risks requires thorough
training, strict safety policies, and regular maintenance of tools and equipment.
