A: Reading passage
Direction: For items 1-10 read the following passage carefully and answer the questions
that follow.
Although Ethiopia is very reach in wild life, it has done very little to protect and cherish this
natural gift. If we want to avoid drought and famine, we will have to maintain the balance of
nature. That is, the pattern of reactions of the plants, animals and people to each other and to
their surroundings must be though over and used wisely.
Quite a lot of the Ethiopia’s’ wild life species are unique. For example, the Mountain Nyala and
the Walia Ibex are found only here. Although our wild potential could be one of the major
sources of tourism, attraction, we have not obtained much economic benefits from it yet. On the
other hand, Kenya safeguards and cares for her wild life greatly. Because of this she obtains
more than two billion dollar from tourist industry annually. Moreover million of the Kenyan has
found jobs in the various kinds of business that provides tourists with the necessary facilities and
services.
Some wild animals would rather live in plains with low altitude. The Awash National Park is an
ideal home for these species. This park is the oldest and most developed wild life reserve in
Ethiopia. The park includes the 1,800 meters high Fantail volcano, a large area of mineral hot-
springs, and extraordinary volcano formations. This natural treasure lies 225 km east of Addis
Ababa and is bordered to the South by the Awash River. Although there are now no giraffes or
buffaloes, its wildlife consists mainly of East African plains animals.
The Bale Mountain National Park is very important to the survival of the wild animals which
prefer a high altitude with open country grasslands. The untouched and beautiful Bale Mountain
rise to a height of more than 4,000 meters. The range borders the southern highlands of Ethiopia.
Mountain Tullu Dimitu, the highest peak in southern Ethiopia, reaches 4,337 meters. The Bale
Mountain National Park, with an area of 2,400 square kilometers, is a heaven of calm and safety
for the Mountain Nyala, Menelik’s Bushbuck and Simian Red fox. This fox is one of the most
colorful members of the dog family and is abundant there more than anywhere else in Ethiopia.
Although all three endemic animals thrive in this environment, the Nyala is the largest of them
all in number.
