ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I wish to express my profound gratitude to all those who played a pivotal role in the
successful completion of my School-Based Assessment in Building and Furniture
Technology. Foremost, I am deeply indebted to my teacher, Neville Evans, whose
expert guidance, unwavering encouragement, and constructive feedback were
indispensable throughout this project. Their insightful instruction significantly enhanced
my comprehension and practical application of the subject matter. I am also thankful for
the steadfast support and encouragement provided by my family and friends, which
sustained my focus and dedication. This achievement would not have been possible
without the collective support and contributions of each individual.

INTRODUCTION
This School-Based Assessment in Building and Furniture Technology has been a great
exploration into this field. My goal was to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding
of the techniques and applications involved. This project served as a valuable platform
for both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, focusing on design,
construction, and finishing of elements that adhere to standards. Throughout this
process, I delved into critical areas such as material selection, structural integrity, safety
protocols, and aesthetic considerations. This experience has not only sharpened my
technical proficiency but also fostered my creative and problem-solving abilities. The
successful completion of this assessment was a beneficial learning journey, highlighting
the vital role of Building and Furniture Technology in creating functional and visually
appealing spaces that enhance our daily lives.

SIMPLE MANUFACTURING PRODUCT
A chisel is a hand tool with a sharpened edge, used for shaping wood, stone, metal, or
other materials by cutting or carving. It's a fundamental tool in woodworking, masonry,
and metalworking. The user typically drives the chisel with a mallet or hammer.
Here are some common types of chisels:
Woodworking Chisels:
● Bench Chisels: These are general-purpose chisels used for a wide range of
woodworking tasks, such as paring, chopping, and shaping. They typically have
a flat blade and a handle made of wood or plastic.
● Mortise Chisels: These are thicker and stronger than bench chisels, designed for
cutting mortises (rectangular holes) for joints. They have a robust blade and a
sturdy handle to withstand heavy blows.
● Paring Chisels: These have long, thin blades with a shallow bevel, ideal for
delicate and precise cuts, such as smoothing surfaces and creating fine details.
● Dovetail Chisels: These chisels have beveled sides, allowing them to fit into the
tight angles of dovetail [Link] Chisels ): Known for their laminated steel
construction and extremely sharp edges, these chisels are highly prized for their
precision and durability.
Masonry Chisels:
15
● Cold Chisels: These are made of hardened steel and are used for cutting metal,
such as bolts, nuts, and rivets. They are also used for cutting stone and concrete.
● Brick Chisels (Bolsters): These have a wide, flat blade and are used for cutting
bricks and masonry blocks.
● Stone Chisels: These come in various shapes and sizes, used for carving and
shaping stone. They include point chisels, flat chisels, and tooth chisels.
Metalworking Chisels:
● Cold Chisels: As mentioned earlier, these are essential for cutting and shaping
metal.
● Diamond-Point Chisels: Used for cutting V-shaped grooves and corners.
● Cape Chisels: Used for cutting narrow grooves and slots.
Key Features:
● Blade: The cutting edge of the chisel, typically made of hardened steel.
● Bevel: The angled surface on the blade that creates the cutting edge.
● Handle: The part of the chisel that the user grips, providing control and leverage
Functional Analysis:
● Purpose:
○ To cut, shape, and remove wood, metal, or stone.
○ To create joints, smooth surfaces, and carve details.
● Usability:
○ Requires skill and precision.
○ Handle design impacts comfort and control.
○ Blade sharpness is crucial for effective use.

Economic Analysis:
● Cost of Materials:
○ Steel quality and handling material influence cost.
○ Manufacturing complexity affects price.
● Manufacturing Costs:
○ Heat treating and precision grinding are costly.
○ Hand-forged chisels are more expensive.
● Retail Price:
○ Ranges from affordable to high-end, depending on quality.
16
● Profitability:
○ Specialized chisels (e.g., carving chisels) have niche markets.
Product Analysis:
● Line:
○ The sharp edge of the blade, the profile of the handle.
○ The lines of the grind on the metal.
● Shape:
○ The blade shape (flat, curved, etc.), the handle shape.
○ The shape of the cross section of the blade.
● Color:
○ Steel color, handle color.
○ Any markings or finishes on the metal.
● Texture:
○ Smoothness of the blade, grip of the handle.
○ The texture of the metal after it has been worked.
● Form:
○ The three dimensional nature of the blade and handle.
○ The way the blade and handle are assembled.
● Space:
○ The space that the chisel occupies when stored.
○ The space that the chisel creates when it removes material.
○
Safety Analysis
:
● Safety Standards:
○ Blade sharpness poses a risk of cuts.
○ Handle design should provide a secure grip.
○ Cold chisels require eye protection.
● Risk Assessment:
○ Potential for injuries from slips or misdirected blows.
○ Risk of flying metal fragments when using cold chisels.
The choice of chisel depends on the specific task and the material being worked

Basic Architectural Drawing Project
Description/redesign of a building component
Statement of the problem
Most of the time platforms are built flat on the ground using a thick slab of concrete.
This can result in cracking the platform when its placed under pressure, flooding and
erosion contribute to this.
Solution of Problem
Foundation and curb wall should be introduced. The foundation provides stability while
the curb wall elevates the platform preventing flooding, erosion and cracks under
pressure.

At Saint Joseph High School, the lack of proper storage in our classroom has led to
books and materials being left scattered, making the space cluttered and difficult to
manage. Without designated shelves, books are at risk of damage, and students
struggle to keep their learning materials organized.
As Grade 11 Technical students, we recognized this issue and came up with the
idea to design and construct a bookshelf. This bookshelf will provide a dedicated
space for storing books and materials, protecting them from damage while keeping
the classroom neat and organized. Not only will this project improve our learning
environment, but it will also allow us to apply our technical skills in a meaningful
way, benefiting both current and future students.
