Tutorial Sheet 1
Sub: Aerospace Structural Dynamics (AE31002)

Prob.1 A 0.453 kg mass attached to a light spring. It elongates 7.87 mm. Determine the
natural frequency of the system. If the preferred natural frequency is four times of the
above system then what should be combination of mass and spring stiffness.
[Ans: 5.62 Hz]
Prob.2 A 4.53 kg mass attached to the lower end of a spring whose upper end is fixed
vibrates with a natural time period of 0.453s. Determine the natural time period when a
2.26 kg mass is attached to the mid-point of the same spring with the upper and lower
ends fixed.
[Ans: 0.159 s]
Prob.3 Determine the effective spring stiffness and also find out natural frequency.

Prob.4 An unknown mass m kg attached to the end of an unknown spring k has a natural
frequency 94 cpm. When a 0.453 kg mass is added to m, the natural frequency is lowered
to 76.7 cpm. Determine the unknown mass m (kg) and the spring constant k (N/m).
[Ans: m=0.902 kg, k=87.439 N/m]
Prob.5 A Spring-mass-dmaper is excited by a force F0sin(ωt). At resonance the amplitude
is measured be 0.58 cm. At 0.80 resonant frequency, the amplitude is measured to be
0.46 cm. Determine the damping ratio ξ of the system.
[Ans: ξ=0.1847]
Prob.6 Determine the natural frequency of the system consisting of 22.967 kg mass
attached to a horizontal cantilever beam of negligible mass of dimension, Length=0.3175
m, width=2.54 cm., depth=0.635 cm. through the coil spring of constant k2 = 1870 N/m.
The Young’s modulus of the material is 206.643 GPa.
[Ans: ω=8.31 rad/s]
Prob.7 A harmonic motion has an amplitude of 0.20 cm and a period of 0.15 s. Determine
the maximum velocity and acceleration.
[Ans: 𝒙𝒙̇ = 𝟖𝟖. 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑 𝒄𝒄𝒄𝒄/𝒔𝒔, 𝒙𝒙̈ = 𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑𝟑. 𝟗𝟗 𝒄𝒄𝒄𝒄/𝒔𝒔𝟐𝟐 ]

Prob.8 An accelerometer indicates that a structure is vibrating harmonically at 82 cps

with a maximum acceleration of 50 g. Determine the amplitude of vibration.
[Ans: 𝒙𝒙 = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎]

Prob.9 A harmonic motion has a frequency of 10 cps and its maximum velocity is 4.57
m/s. Determine its amplitude, its period, and its maximum acceleration.
[Ans: 𝒙𝒙 = 𝟕𝟕. 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐 𝒄𝒄𝒄𝒄, 𝝉𝝉 = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏 𝒔𝒔, 𝒙𝒙̈ = 𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐𝟐. 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏. 𝟗𝟗 𝒄𝒄𝒄𝒄/𝒔𝒔𝟐𝟐 ]

Prob.10 Express the complex vector 4 + 3i in the exponential form Aeiθ.

[Ans: 𝒛𝒛 = 𝟓𝟓𝒆𝒆𝟎𝟎.𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔𝟔 ]
