Emotional Intelligence helps a person to build his relationships with people stronger,
it helps them to succeed both at school and work, and it helps them to achieve both
of their career and personal goals. In work, EQ helps to connect with a person's
feelings, in which these intentions will further turn into actions, in result, it will make
more informed decisions about what matters the most to a person. Intelligent
Quotient (IQ) will define a person's capabilities and intelligence, while Emotional
Quotient (EQ) will serve as the internal drive of a person to motivate itself everyday
at work.

2. Explain each of the five essential principles of emotional intelligence as defined by

Daniel Goleman. For each one, explain how these can assist with building better
workplace relationships and being a better manager.

Self Awareness - individuals must be comfortable both with their own thoughts and
emotions, and how these certain emotions may affect or impact other people. The
first step to overcoming your emotions is to both understand and accept the way
you feel.

Work Application: Being a better manager should also know that a leader affects its
own followers, if a person is able to understand and accept his or her emotions in a
way that he or she is aware that it may affect the emotions of other people. Being
composed with your emotions will further prevent stress and conflicts between a
manager and its employees.

Self-Regulation - an individual should be aware of his or her emotions, but he or she

must also learn how to both manage and control you impulses and emotions.

Work Application: Sometimes negative emotions may make a person to act rashly or
without caution, which will lead to unnecessary mistakes which will damage the
relationships between a manager and its employees. Being in control of emotions
will help a manager to calm itself before doing any action to prevent damaging any
relationship with the employees.

Internal Motivation - passion at work will help an individual to sustain its daily
motivation which will lead to a clearer decision making and a better understanding
of the company's goals and objectives.

Work Application: Again, a manager's aura will somehow affect its employees, when
a manager shows a motivated energy, it will surely pass throughout its employees. A
well-motivated manager will also make its employees well-motivated towards their
goals at work.

Empathy - being aware with you own emotions is helpful, but also being mindful of
other people's emotions. An individual must also know how to understand other
people's emotions and how to properly react to that certain emotion.
Work Application: It will help the manager to identify and understand a certain
mood of its employees, and to properly react and respond to it which will help
develop a healthy and long term relationships.

Social Skill - Goleman defines this as "friendliness with a purpose", which means that
everyone is treated politely and respectfully, which are also used to establish healthy
relationships for personal and organizational benefits.

Work Application: A social will help a manager to establish equality at work which
will show that everybody must be treated with respect and politeness.

3. Explain the key principles of the Emotional Intelligence Theory developed by Caruso
and Salovey (2004).

According to the authors of the theory, for a personal to be defined as emotionally

intelligent, they have to have four basic abilities:

Correct Emotional Perception and Expression

First Stage: A person must be able to understanding what are they feeling, just like
how Goleman defined it.

Second Stage: A person will acquire the ability to understand other people's feelings
and thoughts.

Third Stage: A person will acquire the ability on how to properly express their own
emotions in a way to also communicate their needs.

Fourth Stage: A person will gain its ability to distinguish between a correct and
incorrect emotional expressions.

Emotional Facilitation of Thinking

First Stage: A person's emotion will help it direct their own thoughts to the most
important information.

Second Stage: A person's emotions will start to intensify so that it will help him or
her to identify it.

Third Stage: In this stage, a person will consider different point of views on a certain
subject.

Fourth Stage: A person's emotions will now help him or her to make certain good
decisions and to think a lot more creatively.

Understanding Emotions

First Stage: A person will acquire the ability to distinguish between basic emotions
and the proper terms to describe it.

Second Stage: This ability will help you to further be able to place your emotion in
your emotional state.
Third Stage: A person will have the ability of interpreting complex emotions.

Fourth Stage: A person will also acquire the ability of detecting different transitions
between their emotions.

Emotional Regulation for Intellectual and Emotional Growth

A person will have the ability to require his or her own willingness of not limiting the
important role of his or her emotions actually have.

A person will let himself or herself choose which are useful or not useful emotions
upon identifying them.

A person will acquire the ability to study emotions.

Lastly, a person will be able to regulate both their own emotions and other people's
emotions, which focuses on moderating negativity and increasing positivity.

4. Explain three strategies that can be used to build emotional intelligence.

Pay more attention to your emotions on a daily basis.

It helps a person to be more sensitive when certain emotions arise through

identifying them and understanding the reason why certain emotions are present.

Practice empathy.

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another, which is also
known as "putting yourself in the shoes of others". People can establish a deeper
connection with anyone by being thoughtful about how they interact with them by
using their emotional dexterity.

Exercise Self Regulation

To further build your EQ, both self-examination and self-regulation are important.
Instead of doing the usual practices and procedure, chart a new course which is
informed by a more focused behavior that serves a higher purpose.

5. Explain how a manager with high emotional intelligence can assist in achieve
business objectives. Provide an example to illustrate your answer.

A person with high emotional intelligence are better at motivating themselves. A

manager who knows how to motivate himself or herself will affect its overall well-
being. It will drive them more in a positive way to be more productive at work, and it
will also lead to spreading the positivity through motivating the employees. If all of
them have worked with positivity and motivation, it will help a company to achieve
its business objective a lot easier. A well motivated manager could not do it alone,
but a company who works together towards one goal will make it possible.

6. Explain the importance of recognising cultural differences in emotional intelligence.

Provide two examples example to illustrate your answer.

Culture can somehow impact a person on a way how they display, perceive and
experience different emotions. Because of the existing cultural display rule, different
people may use this as a guide on how they choose to regulate their emotions which
influences the individual's emotional experience and leading to a general cultural
differences in the experience and display of emotions.

Two Examples:

In Asian Cultures, social harmony is much more prioritized compared to other

cultures, so Asians may show and display their emotions differently which is more
towards more on showing respect, politeness and equity between different people.

However, Westerners, mostly in Europe and United States, these people prioritze
individual self-promotion more. These people will display their emotions more on
the individual itself, like on how they show and present theirselves (capabilities and
personalities) to other people and the like.

7. Explain two ways of communicating effectively with a diverse workforce with varying
cultural expressions of emotions.

Expand Your Cultural Understanding

A person should understand the differences in their cultural norms and expectations,
because people with different cultural backgrounds tend to communicate in
different ways which have different expectations for formality and politeness.
Understanding these differences may help one to communicate in ways that they
don't offend or confuse other people.

Be Respectful

By communicating in the most respectful way, a person may avoid unnecessary

conflicts or misunderstandings between people in different cultures. In order to be
respected, one must also be respectful of other people's feelings and thoughts.

8. Explain two ways of using emotional intelligence to build effective workplace

relationships.

Managing Stress Better

It is expected that emotional intelligence helps with stress management. If all the
people have the ability to manage their emotions properly, they will be able to work
calmly under pressure and to keep disruptive emotions and impulses in check which
will further help them to avoid potential damage or conflicts to the workplace
relationships. It is somehow a way to do a favor for other, work is already stressful,
don't make it a lot more stressful for yourself and for other people.

Ability to Coach and Mentor Others

People with high emotional intelligence may sense other people's potential. This will
help the leaders to uncover the employees' developmental needs. This will be done
through coaching and mentoring them towards to improving their needs, which will
further strengthen workplace relationships.
