THERMAL COMFORT PRINCIPLES

Every day in my boarding house feels different because of the changes in the weather. At
night, it happens to be so cold which I don’t feel any comfort anymore. So, what I did is use two
blankets in order to somehow protect my body to cold surrounding. Sometimes my hands and feet
get so cold that it’s hard to sleep. The room feels quiet and still during those cold nights. Sometimes
I like the peace, but other times, it makes me feel a bit lonely.

During the day, things change a lot. The sun hits my room directly, making it really hot.
It gets so warm that I sweat even when I’m just sitting. The fan doesn’t help anymore, since it just
adds some heat to my room. I open the windows, but the air doesn’t cool the room much. The
sunlight shines so bright that it sometimes hurts my eyes. I’ve tried closing the curtains, but it
doesn’t help much. The heat makes me feel tired and lazy, and I find it hard to focus on anything.

Besides the temperature, other things also affect how I feel. In the mornings, I hear people
moving around, talking, or cooking, which makes the place feel alive. At night, it’s mostly quiet
except for some dogs barking, people talking far away, or the big vehicles in which it even vibrates
towards my room in which I can’t sleep comfortably. The light in my room also changes my mood.
During the day, the bright light makes me feel awake, but sometimes it’s just too much. At night,
the dim light makes things calm but sometimes a bit sad.

All these things, how hot or cold it is, how bright or dark, noisy or quiet. affect how I feel
each day. Living here makes me notice these small things more. Some days, I enjoy the calm
nights, but the hot days can be really uncomfortable.
FIGURE 1: INDOOR SPACE LAY OUT

Staying in my boarding house has made me realize how important thermal comfort is and
how much it affects how I feel in the space. Thermal comfort is about feeling neither too hot nor
too cold, but in my room, it’s hard to find that balance. At night, the temperature drops, and the
room becomes very cold. This makes it hard to get a good night’s sleep. According to the principle
of thermal comfort, people feel best when the temperature is just right for their body. In my case,
the cold nights show that the room lacks proper insulation, and I feel the discomfort clearly. Using
thicker blankets or sealing gaps where cold air comes in might help improve this.

During the day, the situation is completely different. The sun directly hits my room, and it
becomes very hot. I find myself sweating and feeling tired, which makes it hard to focus on
studying or relaxing. The principle of thermal comfort states that air movement, humidity, and
temperature all play a role in how comfortable we feel indoors.

Living here has made me understand how indoor temperature affects my mood and energy. When
I am too cold or too hot, I feel uncomfortable, restless, and easily irritated. Thermal comfort isn’t
just about temperature, it’s about how air, humidity, and surroundings work together to make a
space comfortable. I realize that applying thermal comfort principle is very important for
controlling airflow, temperature and humidity, could make my room more comfortable and help
me feel better throughout the day and night.
