Understanding the Circulatory System

The document provides an overview of the human circulatory system, detailing the functions of various organs, including the heart, and the roles of blood vessels such as arteries and veins. It explains how blood circulates, delivering oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, and introduces the concept of measuring pulse rate. Additionally, it discusses how exercise affects pulse rate and encourages reviewing the lesson and completing quizzes.

Today we will...

.
Key Vocabulary:
- Talk about organs
circulation heart
- Study circulation and function pump
the circulatory system
blood vessels

- Investigate pulse rate veins arteries

Organs are different parts
of our body.

Every organ has a different function.

This means that

they do different things.

A function is a job.
What is this? What are these? What is this?

brain eyes stomach

A function is a job.

What is the function of the eyes?

What do your eyes do?

The function of your eyes is to see!

A function is a job.

What is the function of the brain?

The brain is a very, very important organ.

It controls everything in our body, like our

vision, memory, hunger and even our feelings!
Our body has
different organ systems.

- The digestive system (for eating)

- The skeletal system (bones)

- The muscular system (muscles)

- The respiratory system (breathing)

- The circulatory system

The Circulatory System

Does anybody know anything about

the circulatory system?
The Circulatory System

The circulatory system is like a highway

for the blood in our body.
The Circulatory System

We have about 5 litres of blood in our body.

It is a red liquid, with an important function.
What is this?

It’s a heart.
What is the function of the heart?

The heart pumps (pushes) blood

around your body.

This is called circulation.

Your blood is like a delivery truck.

Your blood carries and delivers

two things that your body needs.

What are these two things?

1. Oxygen

2. Nutrients
Your blood delivers oxygen.

Your blood delivers nutrients.

How does blood get to your organs?

Through blood vessels.

How does blood get to your organs?
Blood vessels are like roads that go from your
heart to your body... and back again.
There are three main types of blood vessel.

Notice there are red and blue blood

vessels on the picture.

The red ones are arteries.

The blue ones are veins.

*They are not really red and blue. It is just

to make it easier to remember!
We will learn two types
of blood vessel today.

vein artery
(veins) (arteries)
Arteries
Arteries carry blood
with oxygen from
your heart to
your body.
Veins
Veins carry blood
without much oxygen
from your body back to
your heart.
How does the circulatory system work?
The Lungs
1. The lungs put
oxygen into
blood.
2. The heart pumps
blood with oxygen
through arteries to
3. Veins take the the body.
blood without
oxygen back to
the heart.
4. The heart pumps
the blood through
the lungs to get
...circulation! more oxygen.
Let’s move on to
your pulse.

We can test how fast our heart is

beating, by measuring our pulse.
What is your pulse?

At certain parts of our body, we can feel a vibration.

This is our blood pumping through our blood vessels.

We call it our pulse.

How can you measure your pulse?

First we need to find our pulse!

These are two of the easiest

places to find your pulse.
How can you measure your pulse?

We measure pulse rate in beats per

minute (b.p.m).
Resting pulse rate.

Resting means doing nothing!

What happens to
your pulse rate after exercise?

After exercise, your pulse

should increase.
Why do you think your pulse gets
faster when we exercise?

- When we exercise our body

needs more oxygen.

- Our heart pumps faster to deliver

more oxygen, so our pulse gets quicker.
