Lesson aim(s) related  SO 4 – Dismantle and Assemble V-Belt Drive – ideally conducted in a workshop environment
to curriculum  SO 5 – Perform quality checks on V-Belt Drives – ideally conducted in a workshop environment
Key concepts and  Adjustment and application of a straight edge for aligning pulleys
terminology  Proper torque settings for fastening the base plate of the electric motor
 Rotational speed principles when dealing with belt drives (See video on COP-site)
 All belt drive terms (centre distance, pulley, pulley groove, jockey, tensioner, angle of wrap/contact, etc)
 Concept of alignment of belt
 Belt tension in kg per meter - method
Key questions Why would you need to maintain a certain amount of belt tension?
(Questions you will ask How does the belt classification bring greater efficiency to a belt drive? Think of Z,A,B,C,D and SPZ, SPA,
in class or use as SPB, SPC, 8V Delta.
assessment) Why choose a specific belt over another?
What is good about belt drives over any other drive type?
What is bad about belt drives?
Could you match a type of belt used with a specific context or load?
What do you need to look out for when maintaining a belt drive? – refer to a belt-type in specific cases?

Main activities:

SO 3: BELT DRIVE PLANNING & PREPARATION

 Facilitate the understanding of the kind of planning Form Groups (5 for the practical exercise)
and preparation required for belt drives; benefits of
use, non-effective characteristics.  List PPE required in the workshop
 Group the students and give them a class activity
 In groups they make a research on different 25 minutes
 Revise the activity in workshop before the end of the
terminology used and try to explain their meaning
lesson.
 Facilitate the importance and dangers of not wearing
PPE in the workshop

SO 4: DISMANTLE & ASSEMBLE

 Checking of v-belt sizes and lengths; maintenance,
fault finding and diagnosis; alignment and tensioning;  Pay attention to the video. 25 minutes
installation of v-belt drives; elimination and  Respond to questions after the video is stopped
accommodation of belt deflection. momentarily.
 Disassemble the v-belt drive.  Workshop interaction

completion. See Practical Workbook / ICASS Task
 Apply appropriate safety practices during the process.

1. Consolidation and ending:

Facilitator: Give a summary of the ENTIRE TOPIC: Class interacts with the summary on the prompt from the 15 minutes
 Belt drive safety (Basic fitting safety; Use of guards; facilitator.
isolation/ Lock-out procedures)
 Belt drives – basic assembly, adjustment / alignment Please note: Store tools and equipment; Clean the workshop
where possible /functionality; impact on efficiency & and practice good housekeeping – applicable where facilitators
belt drive & components introduce students to a workshop environment.
 Belt drives (Function/purpose; classification,
types/examples)
 Review – characteristics of V-belt drive
 Types, and applicable adjustment and/or conditions.
 Dismantle and Assemble

SO 5 Perform quality checks

Recap and revise the work done for this topic.

Assessment: opportunities and evidence – indicate informal or formal

 Complete Notes
 ICASS Practice – Dismantle and Assemble a V-Belt Drive [students must include adjustment, tensioning, alignment of pulleys)
 A practical report must accompany the completed task.
 Prepare for a Class Practical Test – fortnight’s (2 weeks) time

Written work: in exercise books, on worksheets and /or self-assessment activity

Written work must be completed by first week after the completion of this topic (Belt drives )

This includes the completion of ALL Self-assessment and Practical activities

Lecturer’s reflection on current lesson: After your lesson- what went well, where can you improve, what will you do different

To be completed after the lesson

Follow-on: what will be done in the next lesson (adjustments in lesson plan)

 The next lesson will move to the next topic – in the facilitators schedule.
