Production Process

The Production process refers to the process and the stages in making of the
media product. There are three key stages of the production process are:
● The first stage is the Pre-production which is the planning stage,
● The second stage is the Production where they are producing the materials
● The final stage is the Post-production where they edit everything and finish
the product.

Magazine Production Equipment and Software

There are a few components to make a magazine which is:

DSLR Camera
A DSLR camera, or Digital Single-Lens Reflex camera, is a type of camera that uses
a mirror and a prism to allow the photographer to see the exact scene they are about
to capture through the viewfinder. The DSLR camera has high quality images; they
typically have larger sensors than point-and-shoot cameras, which results in better
image quality, especially in low light. Interchangeable lenses This allows
photographers to choose the best lens for the specific situation, such as a wide-
angle lens for landscapes or a telephoto lens for wildlife. manual control DSLR

speed, and ISO, giving photographers more creative freedom.

Adobe Photoshop is a critical tool for designers, web developers, graphic artists,
photographers, and creative professionals. It is widely used for image editing,
retouching, creating image compositions, and adding effects. Digital or scanned
images can be edited for use online or in-print. This is needed for magazine
production because the magazine has to have a lot of images and texts on the
magazine so Adobe photoshop helps by placing the images in the right area’s and it
add extra details for example cropping images and text,
making the magazine look bright or outstanding and for it
to be retouched if necessary.

Magazine Production Process

Pre-Production- content
In the content stage of pre-production, the editorial team in the magazine industry
are assigned roles to make the work flow easier, sharing ideas with one & another,
plain content with each other and necessary research must be established. This is
where the team makes a final decision.

Pre-Production - Flat planning
In the pre-production flat planning, the editors team structures a page by page flat
plan for the whole magazine . This is because it helps structure the content, helps
construct the order of the magazine and helps to plan the length of the magazine
pages. This will make the magazine easier to traverse through and it to look
organised for the reader to understand where to start reading and where to end on
the page.

Production
During the production stage, the editorial team will plan and write the articles, do all
the research for the magazine structure, photo shoots will be arranged and the
achieve images will be selected for the magazine if necessary.

Production- Writing and Sub-editing
In the sub-editing stage, the sub editor checks the article/ texts for any spelling
mistakes or incorrect grammar usage. If the article is too long the sub editor would
either make the person who wrote the article to make it short or they would make it
short. If the article is too short they would ask the person who wrote the article to
add more. The sub editor makes a template that is in line with the house style.

Post- Production- Checking Printers proof
In the checking printers proof, The magazine is sent off to the publishers for
approval and the editor will also approve and they will be printing out more and
more copies of the magazines with everything in order.

Post- Production- Completion and Distribution
They will print the final few magazine copies and distribute them out into the public
domain. This was where they would put them in shop and other local areas.

Magazine Job Roles

Sub-editor
A Sub-editor is a person in a magazine company who help the main editor
with decision and supporting/ correct any mistakes the main editor makes
In the magazine.
The sub-editor uses looks for spelling mistakes,grammar errors, image
Usage and more and relay it back to the main editor or the sub-editor can
change it with the main editors permission.

Staff writer
A staff writer works for various departments in the magazine generating articles.
Staff writers also keep up-to-date on the news to find relevant story ideas and spot
trends. This is usually done through interviews with individuals to obtain information
for their article. You may come across articles focussed on specific fashion trends for
a season where the staff writer is tasked with keeping subscribers in the know about
what's in fashion.
Photographer
The photographer would take pictures for the magazine. They would go anywhere to
take pickers that fit what the magazine has to offer. They would go to photo shoots,
they would go anywhere that is legal to trespassing.
