READING COMPREHENSION
Read the following passage carefully and answer questions below it.
Even at
I would leave the camp early in the morning, even at that hour the sun was fierce, leaving the camp I
then plunged into the coolness of the forest, into a dim green light that filtered through the leaves above.
Picking my way through the gigantic tree trunks, I moved across the forest floor, so thickly covered with layer
upon layer of dead leaves that it was soft and as springly as a person carpet. The only sounds were the incessant
Zithering of the millions cicades, beautiful green-and-silver insects that clung to the barks of the trees, making
the air vibrate with their cries, and when distributed, they would fly transparent glittering wings. Then there
seemed to be another ever present companion, a little bird that I never identified, but which followed plaintive
“whooee” noise asking question in its liquid tones.
In places there would be a great gap in the root of leaves above, where some massive branch had
perhaps been undermined by insects until it had eventually broken loose and crashed to the forest floor below,
leaving this rent in a forest canopy through which the sunlight sent its golden shafts. In these patches of brilliant
light you would find butterflies congregations, large ones with long, narrow, arranged wings that shone against
the darkness of the forest like dozens of candle flames; delicate little white once like snowflakes would rise in
clouds above my feet, then drift slowly back into the dark leaf mould, Pirouetting as they went. Eventually I
reached the banks of a tiny stream which whispered its way through the water-wom boulders, each wearing a
cap of green moss and tiny plants. A little bit down the course of this stream was a little opening, perhaps
caused by a large fallen tree. This was my hideout, for in one part of the tree trunk the bark had given way and
the hollow interior lay revealed, like a canoe, in which I could sit well hidden by the low growth.

PAPER III: SUMMARY WRITING
Read the passage below and in one paragraph of not more than 150 words, bring out the importance of cocoa
nibs to the body.
Cocoa nibs are crumbled bits of dried cocoa beans which grow on the coca tree. Cocoa nibs producers
dry and crack the beans into small pieces. Cocoa nibs are part of the same beans used in chocolate candy
production, cocoa beans are native to the upper amazon region. While they can be grown in other regions, the
majority grow in South American countries like Brazil and Ecuador, as well as the West African nations, Ivory
Coast and Ghana.
The small and size and intense chocolaty flavour of cocoa nibs help give them the nickname “Nature’s
Chocolate Chips”, you can find both roasted and unroasted, or raw cocoa nibs in the health food section of
many grocery stores. Cocoa nibs contain antioxidants. These antioxidants can help reduce cell damage in your
body, which help prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and cancer. The fibre in cocoa beans
promotes healthy digestion. Getting enough fibre can help soften your bowel movements, prevent hemorrhoids
and help with other digestive conditions.
Per serving, cocoa contains more heart-healthy flavonoids than red wine. These flavonoids have been
linked to improved heart health. You can roast raw cocoa nibs at home or use them in an unroasted state.
Roasted cocoa nibs are less bitter, so you may need less sweetener to add balance to the flavour of recipes that
call for cocoa nibs. Cocoa nibs contain healthy fats and other compounds that can increase the levels of the
hormones serotonin and doparnine in your brain, which impacts your mood.
Cocoa nibs add a punch of chocolaty bitterness to recipes that use chocolate in other forms. For example
you can enhance chocolate bark recipes by adding a small amount of chocolate nibs. Add cocoa nibs to oatmeal,
trail mixes and granola. Use them in place of chocolate chips in crokie and brownie recipes. Dark chocolate,
which is made from the cocoa bean, may increase “good” HDL cholesterol, which can help lower, your risk of
heart attack and stroke. The flavonoids and potassium in cocoa nibs may lower your risk of heart diseases
because they help reduce the stress on your cells and lower your blood pressure.
TEXT RECONSTRUCTION
Below is a letter written by Kevin to his brother Sam. Read it carefully then copy the reconstructed form that
follows and fill the blank spaces with appropriate words and expressions. Underline all your answers.
Greetings Brother,
I am so pleased with the way you handled the building project in the village. This shows
how responsible you are. Before giving you the project, I was in doubts as to whether you would execute it
objectively. But now I am satisfied with the level of honesty you displayed when executing the project. I will be
going to the village tomorrow. You can follow me if you wish. I had a conversation with our father about your
dwindling business and we promised to do something about it. Grandfather saw the phone you sent to him and
he is very happy.
