I. Introduction
In this chapter, the research introduces the problem of kidnapping, particularly its impact on
victims and society, along with possible technological solutions to address it. Kidnapping
remains a serious threat, affecting not only the victims but also their families and communities,
leading to increased cases of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety (Miller, 2019).
Criminals often engage in human trafficking as a source of income due to their desire for wealth,
while others abduct individuals for personal exploitation. According to the Movement for the
Restoration of Peace and Order (MRPO), between 40 to 48 kidnappings were recorded in 2022,
marking an alarming trend compared to the 85 cases in 2019. Meanwhile, the Philippine National
Police (PNP) reported only 27 kidnapping incidents in 2022, suggesting a possible discrepancy
in reported cases. These figures highlight the need for effective intervention strategies.
Technological advancements, such as emergency alert systems, have shown promise in crime
prevention (Smith & Jones, 2020). By integrating innovations like Arduino-based GSM alert
systems, this study aims to explore how technology can enhance emergency response and
potentially reduce the risk of kidnappings.([Link], [Link],

develop the research and make progress:
- What will be the outcome of the study?
- What would be the additional benefit of the solution?
- What would be the advantages and disadvantages of creating an alert system?
II. Review of Related Literature
This chapter reviews eight reviews about a few topics related to this study or research.
Kidnapping: A Global Issue
Kidnapping is a major global problem affecting many countries, and it has serious psychological
and social impacts on victims and their families. Research shows that kidnapping is not just a
crime but a severe social issue that leads to emotional and psychological trauma (Baron &
Strauss, 2017). With kidnapping incidents on the rise, as reported by the Movement for the
Restoration of Peace and Order (MRPO) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), there is a
clear need for effective strategies to prevent and respond to these crimes.
Psychological Impact of Kidnapping
The psychological effects of kidnapping can be devastating for both victims and their families.
Those who have been kidnapped often suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
depression, and anxiety (Miller, 2019). Families of kidnapped individuals experience significant
stress and mental health challenges as well. This underscores the importance of developing
systems that prevent kidnapping and address its psychological effects.
Technological Interventions in Crime Prevention
Technology plays a vital role in creating solutions for crime prevention. The use of electronic
devices and software in monitoring and preventing crime has grown significantly in recent years
(Smith & Jones, 2020). Various technological tools, such as surveillance cameras, GPS tracking,
and emergency alert systems, have been implemented to enhance public safety and provide a
quicker response to emergencies.
Arduino Robotics in Emergency Systems
Arduino is an open-source electronics platform widely used for creating innovative solutions due
to its flexibility and ease of use. Researchers have employed Arduino to develop various
emergency systems that effectively respond to critical situations (Garcia & Lee, 2018). By
integrating Arduino with GSM modules, we can create alert systems that send real-time
notifications via SMS, providing timely information to authorities and potential victims.
GSM Technology in Communication
Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology, a standard for 2G digital cellular
networks, has been crucial in enabling mobile communication worldwide (Brown, 2016). Using
GSM in emergency alert systems allows for efficient communication, which is essential in
life-threatening situations like kidnappings.
Benefits of Emergency Alert Systems
Emergency alert systems are designed to provide quick responses in critical situations. These
systems can significantly reduce response times and increase the chances of positive outcomes
during emergencies (Anderson, 2021). Implementing alert systems using Arduino and GSM can
potentially save lives by providing real-time alerts and location tracking, which are vital in
kidnapping cases.
Challenges and Considerations
While developing alert systems using Arduino and GSM offers many benefits, several challenges
must be addressed. These include ensuring the system's reliability and accuracy, maintaining user
privacy, and addressing potential technical issues that may arise during implementation
(Johnson, 2022). Considering these factors is crucial to ensure the successful deployment and
operation of the alert system.
Future Prospects

will enhance the safety of students and others. Kindly refer to the figure below:
II. Results and Discussion
In this chapter the researchers will discuss on how they achieved their goals in this research.
They will also discuss the trials and errors during experimentation and testing.
The evaluation of the emergency alert system was conducted through rigorous testing in
simulated emergency scenarios. The primary objective was to assess the efficiency, accuracy,
and reliability of the system in delivering distress messages. By analyzing response times, error
occurrences, and overall system performance, this section provides a comprehensive yet
approachable discussion of the findings.
4.1 System Mechanism and Components
The emergency alert system was designed with various electronic components working together
to ensure rapid response in critical situations. The core of the system is the Arduino Uno R3
Microcontroller, which serves as the brain of the operation, executing programmed instructions
to detect and send alerts when the panic button is pressed. To facilitate connectivity and expand
the circuit, a breadboard was utilized, allowing for flexible and secure wiring.
One of the critical elements of the system is the SIM800L GSM Module, responsible for
sending real-time text message alerts. This module requires a stable power source, provided by a
9V battery, which is connected through a 9V battery connector with a DC adapter. The
electrical connections between components are established using jumper wires (male and
female) to ensure reliable data and power transmission.
For convenience and ease of access during emergencies, all components are housed in a storage
unit, making the system portable and easily deployable. A USB cable is used to program the
system, bridging the microcontroller to the computer. The activation of the alert system relies on
a 4-pin button, which, when pressed, triggers the GSM module to send a distress message.
4.2 Programming and Development
The system was programmed using Arduino IDE, a widely used platform for coding
microcontroller-based projects. However, due to the complexity of manually writing the
necessary code for integrating the GSM module, the research team opted to utilize AI-generated
code. This decision allowed for efficient development while ensuring the accuracy of the
program, minimizing errors that could arise from manual coding.
4.3 System Performance Evaluation
Notice and Compare these two figures:
Figure 1: Serial Monitor of the device when the panic button was pressed .
Figure 2: The inbox of the coded SIM number after the panic button was pressed.
The effectiveness of the system was measured through various test scenarios simulating real-life
emergency situations. The two images below provide evidence of the system’s functionality.
● First Image: Shows the emergency text message successfully sent to a recipient,
displaying the message: "I'm Kidnapped."
● Second Image: Displays the real-time system log, confirming that the panic button was
pressed, the message was sent to a registered phone number, and the system executed the
process in approximately 3.07 seconds from activation to message delivery.
This data highlights the efficiency and reliability of the alert system, ensuring that emergency
contacts receive immediate notifications during distress situations.
4.4 Error Analysis
The table below presents an analysis of the errors encountered during system testing. The most
common issue observed was power supply failures, occurring 17 times due to voltage
fluctuations and battery drainage. Signal errors were recorded 12 times, often caused by
poor network reception affecting message delivery. Wire connection issues occurred 9 times,
mainly due to loose jumper wire placements affecting circuit stability. Misinterpretations,
such as false triggers or unrecognized button presses, happened 8 times, while module
malfunctions were noted 11 times, requiring occasional resets. Refer to the table below:
Table: Refers to the possible Errors and its frequency during testing.
4.5 Success Rate of the Alert System
The system’s efficiency was assessed using various performance indicators. The immediate
alert sent was successful 94% of the time, while accurate message transmission was achieved
92% of the time, meaning there were occasional instances where messages were delayed or not
delivered due to network issues. Successful response time, which measures the system’s ability
to send alerts within the expected timeframe, was recorded at 91%, and system activation
without failure was achieved 96% of the time, demonstrating overall reliability. Refer to the
table below:
Table: Refers to the Test Scenarios and Success Rates while testing.
4.6 Final Statistical Treatment of Data
To analyze the system's performance, descriptive statistics were used, particularly mean
response times and standard deviation calculations. The mean response time indicates how
quickly the system processes alerts, while the standard deviation helps assess variability in the
system’s performance. A lower standard deviation suggests consistency, meaning the alert
system reliably sends messages within a predictable time frame, reducing the risk of delays
during emergencies.
4.6.1 Mean Response Time Calculation
The mean response time (average time taken for the system to send an alert after pressing the
panic button) is calculated. The mean response time of the system is 3.13 seconds.
4.6.2 Standard Deviation (SD) Calculation
The standard deviation measures how much the response times deviate from the mean. The
standard deviation is 0.094 seconds.
4.7 Interpretation of Results
● Since the mean response time is 3.13 seconds, this indicates that the system generally
sends an alert in about 3.13 seconds after the panic button is pressed.
● The standard deviation of 0.094 seconds suggests that the response time is very
consistent, with minimal variation between test trials.
● The low SD value means that the system is highly reliable in delivering messages within
an expected time range.
In summary, the emergency alert system demonstrates a fast and consistent response, ensuring
that distress messages are delivered efficiently with minimal delay.
III. Implications and Recommendations
5.1 Implications
The results of this study demonstrate that the emergency alert system is highly effective in sending
distress messages with a rapid and consistent response time. With an average response time of 3.13
seconds and minimal deviations, the system ensures that alerts are delivered almost immediately after
activation. This has significant implications for personal safety, particularly in emergency situations such
as kidnappings or other threats. The accuracy and reliability of the system indicate that it can serve as a
dependable tool for enhancing security measures.
Furthermore, the use of an AI-generated program simplifies the coding process, making the technology
more accessible for implementation. However, occasional errors, such as signal loss and
misinterpretations, highlight the need for further optimization to ensure seamless operation.
5.2 Recommendations
1. Enhancing Signal Stability – Since signal errors were the most frequent issue in
testing, improvements in network connectivity and alternative communication
protocols (such as Wi-Fi or radio frequency) should be explored.
2. Battery Optimization – The system relies on a 9V battery, which may have limited
operational time. Implementing a rechargeable or backup power source can
ensure uninterrupted performance.
3. User Accessibility and Training – To maximize the system’s effectiveness, users
should be trained on how to activate the panic button and understand its
limitations.
4. Hardware Improvements – Strengthening wire connections and securing
components within a durable storage case can minimize system malfunctions.
5. Real-World Testing and Expansion – Future studies should involve real-life
simulations with a broader range of test environments to assess system
adaptability and reliability under different conditions.
By addressing these recommendations, the emergency alert system can be refined to
provide even greater security and efficiency in critical situations.
