Introduction to
IR SENSORS
Definition of IR Sensors
An infrared sensor is an electronics instrument which is used to sense
certain characteristics of its surroundings by either emitting and or the
detecting infrared radiation.
Infrared sensors are also measure or observe the heat of an object as
well as by detects the motion .
This sensor is analogous to human’s
visionary senses which can be used to detect obstacles and these type
of sensors measures only infrared radiation.
APPLICATIONS
• Robotics
• Automotives
• Security Systems
• Industrial Automation
• Consumer Electronics
Obstacle
Detection
In an IR sensor for obstacle detection, an IR LED emits light
detected by a photo diode, causing its resistance to decrease. An
op-amp compares the voltage drop across a series resistor with a
threshold set by a potentiometer. If the voltage exceeds the
threshold, the op-amp outputs a high signal, lighting an LED. The
potentiometer adjusts the threshold to suit environmental
conditions. Proper alignment of the IR LED and receiver is crucial; in
direct incidence setups, they face each other, ensuring line-of-sight
communication. An obstacle blocks or reflects the radiation,
affecting detection
IR SENSOR FOR DETECTION
Observations
IR sensors work well in controlled
environments with consistent
lighting and surfaces that reflect
infrared light adequately. However,
they may face challenges with
highly absorbent materials,
transparent objects, or very bright
ambient light, which can affect the
accuracy of detection and and
provide reliable and immediate
feedback on the presence of objects
within their range.
Conclusion
IR sensors for obstacle detection are reliable and efficient
tools widely used in various applications, from robotics to
automation. They function by emitting infrared light and
detecting the reflection from nearby objects, allowing for
accurate distance measurement and obstacle avoidance and
and provide reliable and immediate feedback on the
presence of objects within their range.
