CHAPTER lll
Methodology
The goal of this chapter was to present the Research Design, Research Locale,
Participants of the Study, Research Instrument, Data Gathering Procedure, and the
Data Analysis Procedure.
Research Design
This study will employ a descriptive qualitative research design to examine the
influence of social media and student behavior on the academic performance of Grade
11 TVL students at Carlos P. Garcia Senior High School. Descriptive research seeks
to provide a comprehensive understanding of a phenomenon by collecting data
through observations, surveys, and interviews, without altering any variables.
Given that qualitative research focuses on exploring human experiences,
viewpoints, and interpretations, this study will utilize semi-structured interviews and
survey questionnaires to gather insights from students. This approach will allow
researchers to analyze students’ behaviors, study habits, and perceptions regarding
their social media usage and its impact on their academic performance.
As noted by Oakley (1981), qualitative interviews provide a structure in which
practices and standards are not only documented but also examined and reinforced.
This method will help collect detailed and meaningful responses, offering a deeper
understanding of how students’ social media behaviors affect their focus, study
routines, and overall academic success.
To ensure a thorough analysis, the collected data will be thematically categorized,
identifying recurring patterns and significant findings. This will help establish the
1
relationship between social media usage, student behavior, and academic
performance.
Research Locale
This study will be conducted at Carlos P. Garcia Senior High School. It is located
at 109 J. Luna St, Poblacion District, Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines. Carlos P

Academic Strand We Have Also Programs For Alternative Learning System
Scheduled Every Sunday 8 to 5pm.
Research Participants
The participants of the study will be consisted of ten (10) Grade 11 TVL
Student’s from Carlos P. Garcia Senior High School in Davao City, Philippines. Since
the school has a significant student population, particularly in the Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood (TVL) strand, participants will be chosen at random to ensure a balanced
representation.
The researchers believe that this sample size Is adequate to gather meaningful
insights into the effects of social media on students’ behavior and academic
performance. The selected participants are expected to provide valuable information
to help address the study’s research questions.
2
Research Instrument
This study employed semi-structured interviews as the main tool to gather
qualitative insights into how social media influences students’ daily behavior, academic
performance, communication skills, and self-perception. The interview guide was
thoughtfully created and validated by research advisers to ensure its clarity, relevance,
and alignment with the research objectives.
The guide consists of several sections, each focusing on specific themes to
explore students’ experiences and perspectives regarding social media use.
Data Collection Procedure
This data gathering procedure outlines the systematic process for collecting
data to explore the impact of social media usage and behavioral changes on the
academic performance of Grade 11 Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) students at
Carlos P. Garcia High School. The study will employ qualitative methods, particularly
semi-structured interviews, to gain in-depth insights into how students’ social media
habits affect their academic performance and behavior.
Participants for this study will be Grade 11 TVL students at Carlos P. Garcia
High School. A purposive sampling method will be used to select a diverse group of
students, ensuring representation across varying academic performance levels. The
research will involve interviewing approximately 10 students to gather a wide range of
perspectives on the subject.
The recruitment process will involve sending invitations to Grade 11 TVL
students explaining the purpose of the study and emphasizing the voluntary nature of
participation. The school administration, class advisers, and guidance counselor will
assist in the process. A consent form will be provided to both students and their
3
parents/guardians, ensuring they understand the study’s goals, procedures, and the
importance of voluntary involvement. Informed consent will be obtained before
participation to ensure ethical standards are met.
The primary method of data collection will be semi-structured interviews. This
approach is well-suited to the study as it allows for flexibility and deeper exploration of
students’ experiences and viewpoints. The interviews will be conducted individually,
either in person or virtually, depending on the availability and preference of the
participants. Each interview will last approximately 10 minutes and will follow an open-
ended question guide, focusing on social media usage, academic behavior, and the
perceived impact on academic performance.
Data Analysis Procedure
“Once the respondents’ answers have been transcribed into text, which
Mthembu (2000) refers to as raw data that needs to be processed into more refined
data for easier analysis, the next step will be to translate the data into English as part
of the refinement process. The refined data will then undergo thematic analysis.
According to Braun and Clarke (2006), thematic analysis is a core analytical method
that should be clearly defined and explained to establish its importance in qualitative
research. This method involves identifying, analyzing, organizing, describing, and
reporting themes within a data set (Braun & Clarke, 2006). The responses to each
question will be coded, and these codes will be grouped into categories. From these
categories, the researcher will generate themes that best represent the most common
answers for each question addressed in the study.
