THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS (2006)

The Pursuit of Happyness, released on December 15, 2006 is an American Biographical drama
film directed by Gabriele Muccino, based on the true story of Chris Gardner, a salesman who
endures many hardships to fulfill his responsibilities as a breadwinner and a father, alongside
struggling to rise from the very bottom to secure position as a Stockbroker at a Brokerage firm,
all to make both ends meet and give his son a better life. The outstanding performance by Will
Smith acting as Chris Gardner, communicating hope and resilience to the audience and his strong
bonding with his son makes the film stand out of the crowd. The film revolves around Chris
Gardner, who invests heavily in Bone Density Scanners but later faces many financial problems
due to their demand deficit. His wife Linda leaves him due to the day-by-day increasing financial
troubles, leading him to face homelessness and is forced to spend nights in the Homeless Shelter
and public restrooms along with his son Christopher. However, he musters up his courage and
along with selling the Bone Density Scanners and taking care of his son, he decides to join a
prestigious brokerage firm as an unpaid internee, enabling him to secure a position as a full-time
stockbroker later. The emotional and financial tensions rushed to their climax when Chris’ wife
left him and his son, struggling through homelessness, forcing them to live in the Homeless
Shelters and public restrooms. However, after months of extreme hardships and challenges, his
determination paid off and finally, after completing the internship program at a brokerage firm
where only one candidate was able to gain the job, he finally secured the position as a full-time
stockbroker which gave him the feel of intense gratitude and relief which reflected through the
moistness in his eyes. In conclusion, The Pursuit of Happyness addresses an important message
to its audience that even in the critical conditions of life, one should never lose hope and believe
in his/her strength, keeping on trying again and again with pure belief. Apart from this, it
highlights the importance of relationships that no matter how critical situations may arise, they
shouldn’t have any impact on the relationships.
