5 Study Skills
There are many effective ways to study to help keep facts and
essential information memorized in your mind. But there are 5 study
skills that I believe are most effective: Effective Reading,
Memorization, Note-taking, Testing, and Time management. For me,
these are the main study skills one should know to properly study
because this helps me get ready for any upcoming tests and has
significant effects on my grade. So the more of these study skills I
use, the better my grades are on the test.
The first study skill on my list is effective reading. This study
skill is important because it keeps me focused on what I am reading so
I can answer any question someone asks me without having to look back
at the text for help. Effective reading helps me to understand the
meaning of the text and find out what the main idea is, so I can be able
to answer most of the questions on the test easily.
Effective Reading helps me to read carefully and find hidden and
important ideas in the text which are very important for me to
remember and understand. Without effective reading, I would just be
reading a piece of text having no attention or focus on it which would
lead me to be confused and unaware of what I just read so I would
most probably fail my test if I don’t read effectively. Effective
reading also helps me to find critical information from the text which
is worth taking note of which brings me to my next study skill; Note
taking.
Note-taking is very important and is my next study skill because
only after I read carefully I can find critical information to take note
of so I know where and what pieces of information are important to
remember and study. I am sure most other people will also agree with
me when it comes to note-taking being an important study skill that
everyone should know because it helps a lot when you have to find
information from the text quickly and easily.
Note-taking is usually the second study skill I use because when
you are effectively reading, you are also annotating along the way,
which means you are taking note of what you are reading and you are
finding out the critical details from the text that are worth
remembering for your upcoming test if you want to answer the
questions accurately.
Memorization is the third study skill I use while studying because
after I shortened what I had to memorize by separating the critical
information from the extra details to make it easier for myself, I now
only had to memorize the critical information. So without note-taking,
I would’ve had to memorize almost all the details and not just the
important ones, this would’ve just wasted my time.
My technique for memorizing critical information is to repeat the
information out loud and then remember something which reminds me
of this information so whenever I look at or remember that one certain
thing I will automatically also remember the critical information I
memorized. After I think I have successfully memorized my
information, I will make sure I have done it correctly by testing myself
and then getting tested by someone else, which brings me to my next
Study skill.
Testing is the fourth study skill I use after I finish memorizing
because it helps me to ensure I remember everything I need to so I
can answer the questions on the test accurately and correctly. After I
tested myself, I double checked by asking someone else to test me and
if I successfully answered and memorized the information correctly, it
proves that my way of studying is effective and helps me remember
critical information.
If I don’t test myself, I won’t know if I memorized my critical
information correctly or not. And if I didn’t, I wouldn’t know if the
answers I am writing on my test are correct. So my order of studying
may be different from others but to me, it helps me get ready for
tests. This then leads me to the main study skill which I believe
everyone must have to stay focused and correctly study; Time
Management.
Before I begin studying, I first manage my time by making a
schedule of what to do at what time so I can always keep track of what
I have to do. Time Management also helps me focus on what I am
studying because I get no distractions from my siblings, my extra
religious classes, my lunch and dinner, and TV. So without time
management, I would be doing everything all at once so I wouldn’t be
able to focus on my work.
Organization is very important because the only way to actually
remember what you are studying correctly and not get confused by
another topic is to organize what you study. This means to study each
topic or detail one at a time. Don’t study more than 1 thing at once and
don’t definitely jump from place to place. Because then you are just
going to get jumbled up information in your head which will lead to
wrong or inaccurate facts or details. I also researched what other
benefits time management & organization can help for studying and the
website“[Link]
school-online-learning-success/” states that “Requiring your child to
have a separate, clean and neat workspace for his materials and
completing coursework before any other activity in his daily schedule
serves to keep him focused and on task not distracted by other stimuli
such as television, games, siblings or pets.” So based on this evidence I
can claim that Time Management and Organization is a very important
study skill that everyone should know and use while studying.
In conclusion, the 5 study skills of my choice which I believe are
very useful and effective in my studying are; Effective Reading,
Memorization, Note-taking, Testing, and Time management. These are
very helpful and easy to quickly master so you can use them every time
you study and ace your upcoming test. And the most important is
Organization because it plays a major role in remembering the correct
information and getting jumbled up pieces of information from
different study topics in your head.
