Close Reading Annotation

Together with your study partner(s), you will annotate a hard copy of the text of “The
Defenders.” Use this instructional page to check off completed tasks and record your annotation
system. You will submit this page with your final product.

Complete an initial read of the text. Re-read the text and make annotations throughout the text
as directed.

Step 1: Reading Purpose/Goal: To create a summary of and engage reader response to the
text. Reader response includes original output that the reader makes based on the text
(thoughts, feelings, questions, inferences, etc).

Step 2: You will annotate for the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. You will
also annotate for unfamiliar words, at least two text provoked questions, at least two text
provoked observations, ELEMENTS of SCIENCE FICTION:
● Time travel
● Space travel/exploration and encounters with extraterrestrial life
● Scientific/Technological advances
● The future
● Apocalyptic visions
● Utopian/Dystopian worlds
● Exploration of contemporary social issues in novel ways

Step 3: Develop your annotation system and record your annotation system after your first read
of the text and before you begin annotating.
