Distribution

Distribution is how media products get to the audience. There are three types of
distribution: retail, subscription and digital download.

Distribution Company for

Empire: Frontline group -
Frontline group distributes EMPIRE magazines all over the UK and Ireland and they
access 42,000 stores from major retail groups and smaller independents shops. They
work for over 150 publishers and studios. Frontline was founded in 1986 by Josh
MacAlicster; in 2008 Bauer Media joined Frontline Group. The current CEO of
Frontline Group is Frank Streatmans. In 2022 Frontline Group started to distribute
other products starting with DVD’s and in 2024 they started to distribute books to
waitrose.

Getting the Magazine

Retail: Retail is the sale of goods to the

public in relatively small quantities for use or consumption rather
than for resale. Most people buy magazines from supermarkets,
corner shops and petrol stations. Empire Magazines usually cost
£5.75 from a supermarket.

Subscription: Subscription is when someone pays for a magazine issue to be

delivered directly to them. This is usually cheaper than buying it from a
supermarket. An upside from paying for a
subscription is that it’s guaranteed to
arrive and you will never miss an issue until
you cancel it. This subscription service’s

subscription is £3 for 3 issues then £29.99 for 6 months.

Digital Download: Digital Download is when

you can buy a downloadable copy of the
magazine. There are also some websites where
you can pay monthly to access a wide variety
of magazines such as Readly which I personally
use. There are quite a few upsides for buying
digital copies; one of them is you can still read them abroad, it can’t be damaged or
lost and it’s better for the environment. Readly’s subscription is £12.99 a month, it
has access to over 8000 magazines and the subscription can be canceled at any
time.
