Question (3) Read the text and answer the following questions. ( 5 marks)
The physical prototype is an important component in the development of machines. It serves as a physical
representation of the machine’s design, allowing engineers to assess its form and functionality. In addition to
providing a physical representation, prototypes also provide extensive testing before making the final product.
Engineers can analyze the prototype's performance, evaluate its durability, efficiency, and safety, and make
necessary adjustments to enhance its overall functionality. Through multiple testing, engineers can identify,
design problems, discover potential issues, and find creative solutions for them. This approach allows for
continuous improvement, ensuring that the final product meets the desired specifications and performance
standards.
The prototyping process involves several important steps to develop and improve a product before it is produced.
It begins with coming up with the idea and purpose of the product. Then, a design is created using techniques
like sketches and computer-aided design (CAD) software. The materials for the product are carefully chosen
based on factors like durability and cost. After that, a prototype is made using methods like 3D printing,
machining, or handcrafting. The prototype is then tested and evaluated to gather feedback and identify any
design flaws. This feedback is used to make improvements and create a better prototype. This process is repeated
until the final version is achieved.

Finally, physical prototypes facilitate effective communication and collaboration. Engineers can use the
prototype to explain their ideas and concepts to stakeholders, clients, or team members. Engineers can also
convey the machine's features, functionality, and potential benefits through the presentation of its prototype. This
provides more collaboration, encourages feedback, and ensures that everyone involved has a clear understanding
of the machine's design and purpose.
