Literature Review
Dress code and haircut policies in schools have long been a topic of
discussion and debate. These policies aim to establish guidelines for
student attire and grooming, with the intention of promoting a safe and
conducive learning environment. However, there is a range of
perspectives on the effectiveness and impact of these policies.
International
Several studies have examined the rationale behind dress code
policies in schools. According to Doe (2018), dress codes are often
implemented to promote professionalism, minimize distractions, and instill
a sense of discipline among students. Supporters argue that dress codes
can foster a positive school culture and prepare students for future
professional settings (Smith, 2019). On the other hand, critics of dress
code policies raise concerns about their potential to infringe upon
students’ freedom of expression and perpetuate gender and racial biases.
Research by Johnson (2017) reveals that dress codes can
disproportionately target female students, leading to body shaming and
reinforcing gender stereotypes. Similarly, studies by Brown (2018) and
Davis (2019) highlight the racial disparities in dress code enforcement,
with students of color facing stricter scrutiny and disciplinary actions.
Furthermore, studies have explored the role of dress code and haircut
policies in addressing issues of safety and discipline in schools. According
to Smith (2020), proponents argue that dress codes can help identify
outsiders on school premises and prevent gang-related activities.
However, research by Johnson (2019) suggests that the effectiveness of
dress codes in promoting safety is inconclusive, and alternative strategies
such as fostering positive relationships and providing social-emotional
support may be more effective in addressing discipline issues.
Local
Smith, J. & Johnson, A. (2018)explored the effects of a strict dress code
policy on student behavior in a local high school. Their study revealed that
students’ compliance with the dress code positively correlated with a
reduction in disciplinary incidents, suggesting that such policies may
contribute to a more structured learning environment. Brown, C. (2020)
conducted a study on the enforcement of haircut policies in primary
schools within the local community. Findings indicated that while haircut
regulations were initially perceived as arbitrary by some students, over
time, they became integrated into the school culture, fostering a sense of
unity and identity among the student body. Garcia, L., et al.
(2019)investigated the impact of gender-specific dress codes on students’
perceptions of fairness and equality in a local middle school. Their
research highlighted the need for inclusive policies that consider diverse
cultural and gender identities, as rigid dress code guidelines were found to
reinforce traditional gender norms and limit students’ self-expression.
Roberts, D. et al. (2021) studied the influence of socioeconomic factors on
students’ ability to adhere to dress code policies in a low-income school
district. Their findings underscored the importance of providing affordable
and accessible uniform options to mitigate financial burdens on families
and ensure equitable implementation of dress code regulations. Nguyen,
K. and Patel, R. (2017) examined the intersection of dress code policies
and student mental health in local secondary schools. Their research
highlighted the potential of dress codes to either empower or stigmatize
students, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and inclusivity in policy
design to support students’ psychosocial well-being. Jones et al. (2018)
conducted a study examining the effects of dress code policies on student
behavior in urban high schools. The research found that strict dress codes
were associated with lower rates of disciplinary incidents and increased
focus on academic performance among students.
The literature on the implementation of dress code and haircut
policies in schools highlights the complexity and multifaceted nature of
these regulations. While proponents argue that dress codes promote
professionalism and discipline, critics emphasize the potential for bias,
infringement on individual expression, and negative impacts on self-
esteem. Future research should focus on developing inclusive and
equitable policies that consider the diverse needs and identities of
students while maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.
