Speed vs. Velocity Explained

Chapter 2 discusses the concepts of speed and velocity, highlighting their definitions, differences, and calculations. Speed is a scalar quantity representing distance traveled per second, while velocity is a vector quantity indicating displacement per second. The chapter includes practical examples and exercises to reinforce understanding of these concepts.

Chapter 2 – Forces And Motion

Topic 2.01 – On The Move

Day 2 Lecture Key: Only the part highlighted or boxed to be given as class note.

 Speed and Velocity

Day 1: Sam is running from house 1 to house 2. He takes 10 s.

Distance travelled in 10 second = 24 m

Distance travelled in 1 second = 24 ÷ 10 = 2.4 m

∴ Speed = 2.4 m/s

Displacement made in 10 second = + 14 m

Displacement made in 1 second = 14 ÷ 10 = + 1.4 m

∴ Velocity = + 1.4 m/s

Day 2: Sam is running from house 2 to house 1. He takes 10 s.

Distance travelled in 10 second = 24 m

Distance travelled in 1 second = 24 ÷ 10 = 2.4 m

∴ Speed = 2.4 m/s

Displacement made in 10 second = ‒ 14 m

Displacement made in 1 second = 14 ÷ 10 = ‒ 1.4 m

∴ Velocity = ‒ 1.4 m/s

 Speed is defined as the distance traveled by an object per second (in 1 second).
 Velocity is defined as the displacement made by an object per second (in 1 second).
 Speed does not have any particular direction; it is therefore a scalar quantity.
 Velocity has a particular direction; it is therefore a vector quantity.
 The S. I. unit of both speed and velocity is meter per second (m/s).
 average speed = total distance ÷ total time
 average velocity = total displacement ÷ total time
 A steady speed or constant speed means the object covers the same distance every second.
 A steady velocity or constant velocity means the object makes the same displacement every
second.
 A steady speed of 5 m/s means the object travels a distance of 5 m in every 1 second.

Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Distance (m) 0 5 10 15 20 25

 A steady speed of 15 m/s means the object travels a distance of 15 m in every 1 second.

Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Distance (m) 0 15 30 45 60 75

 A steady velocity of 20 m/s means the object makes a displacement of 20 m in every 1 second.

Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Displacement (m) 0 20 40 60 80 100

 A steady velocity of ‒ 10 m/s means the object makes a displacement of ‒ 10 m in every 1 second.

Time (s) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Displacement (m) 0 ‒ 10 ‒ 20 ‒ 30 ‒ 40 ‒ 50
