Introduction
• Tourism is a social, cultural and economic phenomenon which
requires the movement of people to countries or places outside their
usual environment for personal or business purposes. It typically
requires the tourist to feel engaged in a genuine experience of the
location they are visiting.
• Travel and tourism have been one of the main industries to be
gravely affected by COVID-19. According to the World Tourism
Organization, global tourism suffered its worst year on record in
2020, with international arrivals dropping by 74 percent. The country
with the biggest tourism revenue loss due to COVID-19 is the United
States. It suffered with a total revenue loss of 30.7 milliondollars
which is approximately 2.4 million rupees.
Tourism in India:
India is the most digitally advanced traveller nation in terms of
digital tools being used for planning, booking and experiencing a
journey. India’s rising middle class and increasing disposable
income has supported the growth of domestic and outbound
tourism.
Our country is naturally and culturally endowed with many
beautiful and attractive places that have fascinated people
around the world. India is known for its unity in diversity that
enriches it with people from many cultures, traditions and
religions which is the big reason for good tourism here
Tourism development in India
• Tourism development is the process of establishing and
maintaining a tourism industry in a particular location. At its
most fundamental level, tourism development can be defined as
the process of developing strategies and plans to increase,
develop and encourage tourism in a particular destination.
• Indian tourism is strongly affected by terrorism, insecurity and
pollution in the country. However, the sincere efforts of the
Government of India are continuing to develop the Indian
tourism industry. The Ministry of Tourism designs national
policies for the development and promotion of tourism. In order
to encourage people, a tourism campaign named ‘Incredible
India’ was launched by the Indian Tourism Development
Corporation in 2005
