Chapter 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter covers the experimental design, experimental layout, Treatment procedure
and application, Experimental Procedure and the instrument used to analyze the data collected.
Experimental Design
This study employed a Randomized Block Design (RBD) to investigate the effect of
Gliricidia sepium leaves extract and Capsicum annuum fruit extract on the mortality of different
insect species infesting Vigna radiata plants.
Experimental Layout
The experimental area measured 100×100 meters, and Vigna radiata plants were planted
using a broadcasted method. The area was naturally infested with insects and 3 different insect
species were collected and used for the experiment. The collected insects were then transferred in
a cage for observation and treatment application.
Treatment
Making the solution
Collect all materials needed including water bottles, Gliricidia sepium, chili pepper,
water, basin, blender, and beaker.
Blend the Gliricidia sepium and chili pepper.
Ferment the Gliricidia sepium and chili pepper for 24 hours.
Extract the Gliricidia sepium and chili pepper that been fermented for 24 hours.
Combine the Gliricidia sepium, chili pepper and water into the water bottles with
amounts required by each treatment.
Treatment Application
The treatments were applied by spraying the insect species in each box with the
designated solution. The treatments consisted of varying concentrations of Gliricidia sepium and
Capsicum annuum solutions:
T1: 1000ml Gliricidia sepium + 0ml Capsicum annuum
T2: 500ml Gliricidia sepium + 500ml Capsicum annuum
T3: 175ml Gliricidia sepium + 825ml Capsicum annuum
T4: 65ml Gliricidia sepium + 935ml Capsicum annuum
T5 (Control): 1000ml water
Each treatment was replicated three times for each insect species, and the response was observed
and recorded over a period of 24 hours.
Randomization
The five treatment were randomly assigned to the insect species in the box using a
random number generator. This ensured that each treatment is equally likely to be assigned to
any box, minimizing bias and ensuring the internal validity of the experiment.

Experimental Procedure
Step 1: Preparation of Experimental Area
The experimental area, measuring 100 x 100 meters, was prepared by planting Vigna radiata
using the broadcast method.
Step 2: Insect Collection
After the Vigna radiata plants were infested, 3-5 different insect species were collected from the
area. Ten individuals of each insect species were randomly selected and transferred to separate
boxes.
Step 3: Treatment Preparation
The treatment solutions were prepared according to the designated concentrations:
- T1: 1000ml Gliricidial sepium + 0ml Capsicum annuum
- T2: 500ml Gliricidial sepium + 500ml Capsicum annuum
- T3: 175ml Gliricidial sepium + 825ml Capsicum annuum
- T4: 65ml Gliricidial sepium + 935ml Capsicum annuum
- T5 (Control): 1000ml water
Step 4: Randomization and Treatment Application
The treatments were randomly assigned to the insect species in each box. The designated
treatment solution was sprayed onto the insects in each box.
Step 5: Data Collection
The response of the insect species to the treatments was observed and recorded over a period of
24 hours. The data collected included [list the specific data collected, e.g., mortality rate, feeding
behavior, etc.].
Data Analysis
The data collected from the experiment will be analyzed using appropriate statistical
method to compare the response of the insect species to the different treatment.
