FOREIGN LITERATURE (Bullying)

In recent years, bullying has significantly increased in frequency. Studies indicate that schools
across the United States face this subtle but widespread problem. According to research by the
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2020), approximately 160,000 adolescents miss
school daily without excuse due to bullying. Additionally, up to 22% of Grade 10 students aged
15 to 16 report experiencing bullying during the school year (NCES, 2020). Bullying takes many
forms, including persistent harassment, physical and verbal abuse, and cyberstalking. These
experiences can lead to severe anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts, further hindering
attendance. Research warns that unresolved bullying contributes to increased absenteeism,
potentially worsening academic performance and emotional well-being (NCES, 2020).
According to the Research by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2020),
approximately 160,000 students skip school daily due to bullying, with 22% of Grade 10
students reporting experiences of harassment. Bullying manifests in various forms, including
physical, verbal, and cyber abuse, leading to severe psychological effects such as anxiety,
depression, and suicidal thoughts. These negative emotional impacts further discourage students
from attending school, ultimately affecting their academic performance and overall well-being.
The study emphasizes the urgent need for schools to implement effective anti-bullying measures
to reduce absenteeism and protect students' mental health.

FOREIGN LITERATURE (Mental Health)

Chronic absenteeism among students is significantly influenced by their mental health. Research
indicates that students experiencing mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, attention-
deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or behavioral challenges, are more likely to miss class
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2022). The CDC highlights that these issues
are prevalent among today's youth and can lead to missed school days. Moreover, chronic stress,
stemming from the demands of academic performance and extracurricular activities, can cause
burnout. Burned-out students, feeling mentally exhausted, may struggle to attend class regularly
(CDC, 2022).
FOREIGN STUDY

Long-term, detrimental effects on students' intellectual and social development may result from
chronic absences. Research from the U.S. Department of Education (2015–2016) shows that
more than 7 million Grade 10 students were chronically absent during that school year. Regularly
absent students may avoid class due to academic struggles or other obstacles at school. Some
students choose to skip even more classes beyond approved absences to avoid the realities of
their education. According to this study, chronic absenteeism reflects a lack of effective student
management within schools (U.S. Department of Education, 2016). The study suggests that
students may miss school due to academic struggles or other challenges, sometimes even
skipping beyond approved absences to avoid facing their education. This highlights a broader
issue of ineffective student management within schools, emphasizing the need for better support
systems to address absenteeism.

LOCAL STUDY

A study conducted at Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School in the Philippines
explored the effects of absenteeism on the academic performance of Grade 10 students during
the school year 2018–2019. The research revealed that absenteeism negatively impacts students'
ability to keep up with lessons, complete assignments on time, and perform well academically.
Students who were frequently absent reported difficulty understanding lessons, which hindered
their academic progress. The study emphasized the importance of regular attendance for both
academic success and social development, highlighting the need for schools to address the root
causes of absenteeism, such as lack of motivation and external challenges (Moldes et al., 2019).
The study conducted at Emiliano Tria Tirona Memorial National High School (Moldes et al.,
2019) highlights the significant impact of absenteeism on students' academic performance in the
Philippines. Frequent absences make it difficult for students to keep up with lessons, complete
assignments on time, and understand key concepts, ultimately hindering their academic progress.
Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of regular attendance in fostering both
academic success and social development. It also identifies external challenges, such as lack of
motivation, as contributing factors to absenteeism. This underscores the need for schools to
implement effective interventions that address the root causes of absenteeism and promote
student engagement.
