Artificial Intelligence in Aviation

Artificial intelligence has reached new heights: a cruising altitude of 10,000 - 70,000 feet, to be precise.
Commercial airlines and military aircraft have already begun to embrace artificial intelligence, utilizing it to
streamline routes, reduce hazardous emissions, improve passenger experience, and optimize missions.
However, with AI comes a broad range of issues, technological obstacles, and even conflicting emotions.

Merits of AI in Aviation :

Improved Operational Efficiency: AI optimizes flight schedules, maintenance, and resource allocation for
smoother operations.
Predictive Maintenance: AI anticipates potential aircraft issues, reducing unplanned maintenance and
enhancing safety.
Real-Time Data Analysis: AI enables real-time decision-making using vast data from various sources,
enhancing safety and operational decisions.

Demerits of AI in Aviation :

Complexity of Integration: Integrating AI into existing airline operations and legacy systems can be
complex and time-consuming, requiring significant resources.
Reliance on Data: AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. Poor quality or insufficient
data could lead to incorrect predictions and decisions.
Security Risks: AI systems, if not properly secured, could become targets for cyberattacks, compromising
sensitive operational and customer data.

Example: Delta Airlines “Use of AI for Predictive Maintenance”

Delta Airlines uses AI for predictive maintenance to improve the safety and efficiency of its aircraft.
They partnered with GE Aviation and its Predix platform to develop an AI-driven predictive maintenance
system. By installing sensors on planes, real-time data such as engine performance and temperature is
collected and sent to the cloud. AI analyzes this data to predict when parts might fail, allowing Delta to fix
issues before they cause problems. This proactive approach reduces unexpected maintenance, helping the
airline avoid flight delays and cancellations. It also saves costs by preventing emergency repairs and
improving fleet availability. Additionally, the system improves safety by detecting potential issues early.
Although the implementation required high-quality data, integration with existing systems, and training for
staff, the results have been highly beneficial. Delta plans to expand AI use in flight operations and customer
service in the future. Overall, AI helps Delta enhance operational efficiency, cut costs, and provide better
service to passengers.
