RESEARCH METHOD
A. Types of the Research
This research is a form of qualitative research. Qualitative research is
research that is descriptive rather than numeric. Usually, this research uses
analytical methods to collect data. According to Bongdan and Taylor in
Moleong, "Qualitative research is research that produces descriptive data, both
in the form of spoken and written words of people or observed behavior"
(Sutikno and Hadisaputra 4) "This qualitative approach is carried out to
explain and analyze individual or group phenomena, events, social dynamics,
attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions" (Qotrun). Therefore, the process of
qualitative approach research begins with the development of basic
assumptions. Then it is associated with the rules of thought used in research.
The data collected in the survey is then interpreted and then presented in the
form of descriptive writing.
B. Types of the Data
Data collection in this study consists of two types of research, namely
primary research and secondary research. "Primary data is original data
directly from the main source through research, observation, surveys, and
others" (Nugroho 171). Primary data is taken from the script of the Ratatouille
movie. "While secondary data is data that already exists or has been
researched but can be used in supporting other researchers" (Nugroho 172).
Data collection can be collected through journals, books, websites, internet
sources, previous research, and textbooks that are still related to research.
C. Data Organizing
C.1 Data Collecting Method
One of method from collecting data in qualitative research is
observation. "Observation is planned observation, analysis, and
interpretation of behavior, action, or a study / phenomenon" (Nugroho
182). So in this study the first step that must be done in data collection is
to watch the Ratatouille Movie several times. The main purpose of this
step is to understand the content of the conflict, characters, plot, and
message of the movie. The next step is to read the movie script from the
Ratatouille movie several times. The goal is to understand more broadly
the content of the story, make an analysis, and interpret each scene in the
characters. After reading the movie script carefully, the last step is to
identify the information by noting some important things that can be used
as supporting data.
C.2 Identifying the Data
“Identification is an act of researching, searching, finding,
recording information and data about something, facts, or a person.
Identifying data can be done with du event i.e. imitating from another
source or person and collecting a data” (Natalia). So what the authors in
this study did after watching Ratatouille Movie several times and reading
the movie script carefully, the next step is to identify the data in order
from start to finish. At this stage, it is done by separating several scenes
included in the dialogue, monologue, and descriptive related to the two
problem formulations.
C.3 Classifying the Data
“Data classification is a grouping of data" (Lutfi). In this resources
data are grouped based on the formulation of the research problem. Data
that has been collected and grouped will make it easier to answer the
problem statement. The data has been grouped in the form of quotes from
movies, forms, types, references, and comments.
C.4 Reducing the Data
"Data reduction is a data processing process carried out after
conducting research" (Salmaa). In this study the next data collection is by
reducing data. Reducing data means, deleting data and not using data to
answer problem formulations with data that is almost the same but less
strong and does not correlate the formulation. The data to be used in
answering the problem statement is the most effective and potential data.
D. Analyzing the data
Analyzing the data is the last stage of the study. “Data analysis is a way
to process data into information so that the characteristics of the data can be
understood and useful for problem solutions” (Setiawan). At this stage, it is
the adjustment of the data that has been analyzed. This research uses
qualitative methods by collecting data in the form of dialogues, monologues,
and narrations from movies. In addition, this study also uses the hierarchy of
needs theory to analyze data. Each statement of the study is supported by data
found from films, film scripts, journals, electronic journals, books, articles,
and others related to the research.
