Planning is the process of setting objectives and determining the best course of action to achieve them. It
involves forecasting future conditions, analyzing alternatives, and choosing the most effective way to reach
goals. Planning is essential for ensuring efficiency, reducing risks, and providing direction for an organization.

2. Types of Plans

 Strategic Plans – Long-term plans that define an organization’s overall direction and objectives.
 Tactical Plans – Medium-term plans that specify how different departments contribute to strategic
goals.
 Operational Plans – Short-term plans detailing day-to-day activities and procedures.
 Contingency Plans – Backup plans prepared for unexpected situations.

3. Planning at Different Levels in the Firm

 Top-Level (Strategic Planning) – Executives set overall goals and policies for long-term success.
 Middle-Level (Tactical Planning) – Managers translate strategic plans into specific departmental
actions.
