Q. A brake band attached to the hinge by means of a riveted joint
shown in Fig. Determine the size of the rivets needed for the load of
10 kN. Also determine the width of the band. The permissible
stresses for the band and rivets in tension, shear and compression
are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm2 respectively. Assume margin (m) = 1.5d;
transverse pitch (pt) = p; Find the pitch of the rivets.

Q. Two tie-bar plates of a bridge structure, 250mm wide and
20 mm thick, are to be connected by a double-strap butt joint
as shown in Fig. The rivets and the plates are made of steel.
The permissible stresses in tension, shear and compression
are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm2 respectively.
(i) Determine the diameter of the rivet by using following
empirical relationship, d=6 𝒕
(ii)Determine the number of rivets by equating the strength
of the plate with the strength of the rivets. Assume that
shear resistance of one rivet in double shear is 1.875 times
its resistance in single shear.
(iii) Determine the efficiency of the joint.

Q. Two flat plates subjected to a tensile force P are connected together by
means of double strap butt joint as shown. The force P is 250 kN and the
width of the plate ‘w’ is 200mm. The rivets and plates are made of the
same steel and the permissible stresses in tension, compression and shear
are 70, 100 and 60 N/mm2 respectively. Calculate 1. diameter of the rivets
2. thickness of the plates 3. dimensions of the pitch, transverse pitch
(0.6p) and margin(1.5d) 4. efficiency of the joint.

There are two sections subjected to tensile stress
across the rivets such as three holes section and two
holes section. Three holes section has minimum
cross section area.
If the main plate is to break at the three holes
section, the two holes section must also fail before
the joint will break. The failure at two hole section
may be due to shear or crushing. Or the plate might
get failure in tension across two hole section rather
than three hole section.
Therefore, strength equations are written for two
holes section.

Q. Two plates, each 5 mm thick, are connected by means of four
rivets as shown in Fig. The permissible stresses for rivets and plates
in tension, shear and compression are 80, 60 and 120 N/mm2
respectively. Calculate: (i) diameter of the rivets; (ii) width of the
plate; and (iii) efficiency of the joint.
