CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Grade 10 student in junior high school encompasses a wide range of

factors that influence their academic performance, career aspirations, and overall

readiness for the transition to senior high school. . There’s a lot of students in the

World struggling what strand there going to choose not because they are

undecided but because of Lack of Knowledge of every strand that they're going to

choose. There are also some students that only choose their strand because of

the influence of their friends or their relatives that can result of Strand mismatch.

The Strand mismatch rate is high between the strand of the learners during their

senior high school and the course they enrolled in college. It is revealed that for

the school year 2017-2018 the rate of mismatch is thirty-nine percent (39%) and

thirty-one percent (31%) for the S.Y. 2018-2019. In Turkey A wide range of factors

impact the choice of teaching as a career and result in entry to the teaching

profession and how it will help them in their career choices in college and that is

according to Ölmez-Çağlar F. (2022). Participants included 271 undergraduate

squalor Ning in an EFL teacher education program of a state university of turkey.

The study, therefore, adopted a correlational design, and more specifically, the

multiple regression technique.

In US Males and females students were almost equally represented in the

study aims to explore the role of values, family, and non-family influences on

career choice in management among a sample of US MBA students. In Cebu City,

Philippines there were 35 students, including five guidance counselors and

advocates (GCA) from different identified public national high show that students

often choose careers that suit the needs of their families. Sometimes, they use

Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and My Space to seek a job, base their choices in

popular courses/degrees today, they even use technology to do that or choose a

career that fits their abilities. This study determined the trends and challenges in

career preferences of the public high schools in Cebu City, Philippines.

This study aims to expand the knowledge of the students of what are the

Factors affecting career choices among grade 10 student on their future career

and for their strand in Senior High school at Basista national high school.

Ultimately, the Goal is to Enlightened the Junior High school students of what are

the best decisions they can make for themselves on choosing the right path for

their career.

Theoretical Framework

According to John Holland’s (1997). Theory of Career Choice maintains that

in choosing a career, people prefer jobs where they can be around others who are

like them. They search for environments. That will let them use their skills and

abilities, and express their attitudes and values, while taking on enjoyable

problems and roles. Behavior is determined by an interaction between personality

and environment.

Statement of the Problem

The aim of this study is to expand the knowledge and understanding of

Grade 10 students of what are the factors that affecting their career choices.

Specifically, it seeks to address the following research questions :

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

Scope and Delimitation

This Research will focus on the factors affecting career choices among

Grade 10 students in Basista National High School during school year 2024-2025.

The study will be limited to forty-five (45) students that currently Grade 10 students

of junior high school. Data will be collected through survey questionnaire.

Significance of the Study

This study is about Factors affecting career choices among Grade 10 students

at Basista National High School (BNHS). The people that would benefit from this

are the following:

Students: This study will help students, especially those in grade 10, make

informed decisions about their future careers.

Grade 10 Students: This research will provide grade 10 students with insights into

relevant career paths aligned with their skills.

Definition of Terms

This section provides definitions for the terms used in this study to ensure

a common understanding and facilitate meaningful discussions.

Basista National High School. It is a school which the respondents are studying

located from Basista Pangasinan in Perez street.

Career. It’s the path you choose to take in your professional life, involving a series

of jobs or roles that contribute to your growth and development.

Choices. It's a ability to select or make a decision when facing a two or more

possibilities.

Decision. Is a choice made from among two or more alternatives. It’s the act of

concluding, resolving, or determining something.

Effect. Describe the changes or impacts that occur as a result of a particular cause

Factor. A circumstance, fact, or influence that contributes to a result or outcome.

Mismatch. Refers to a situation where two things don’t align or correspond.

Student. A person who is learning. They are the one who are studying and they’re

gaining knowledge and skills at school.

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature

According to Alolga, R.N. [Link] (2022). Study Destination Choice and Career

Preferences of International Students at China Pharmaceutical University. This

study had two main thematic aims: first, to determine the factors that influenced

the choice of international students at China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) to

consider China as a study destination; second, to determine the career

preferences of international students upon completion of their various programs of

study. As a cross-sectional study, relevant data were collected from undergraduate

pharmacy students and postgraduates using a self-administered questionnaire.

This study provides additional details on why China has gradually become a study

destination of choice for international students. The career preferences of students

could be useful in the design of academic programs that could meet their job

aspirations.

According to Arbab, A.H. [Link] (2022). Career preference and factors

influencing career choice among undergraduate pharmacy students at University

of Khartoum, Sudan. The pharmacy profession has expanded and adapted to

changes in community needs. Although career planning and understanding the

determinants of career choice are essential, there remains a lack of studies

exploring factors influencing future career plans. This study was conducted to

identify career preferences and factors influencing future career choices among

undergraduate pharmacy students. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the

Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Khartoum. This study emphasized the

importance of understanding job preferences and the factors influencing career

choice, and could be useful in ensuring a future balance between professional

domains and meeting society’s evolving expectations.

According to Fasanmi, (2023), Choice of career is one of the most important

decisions that everyone makes in life. This choice in most cases determines

placement in the workplace. The determinants of the choices students make

career-wise include parents, peers, passion and perceived prospects among

others. The choice of career made by individuals have long-term implications on

their employability status most especially in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR)

which aims at raising global income levels and improve the quality of life for

populations around the world through applied science and technology. The

descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The multi-stage

sampling procedure was used. A purposive sampling technique was used to select

five faculties out of the existing thirteen faculties at Obafemi Awolowo University,

Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Five hundred (500) undergraduates were selected across the five

selected faculties using simple random sampling technique with 100 students

selected from each faculty. Descriptive and Inferential statistics were used to

analyse the data collected for the study.

Participants included 271 undergraduate students majoring in an EFL teacher

education program of a state university in Turkey. Among career motivations,

ability, intrinsic career value and working with children/adolescents appeared to be

the three strongest positive predictors of teacher identity, respectively. Based on

the findings, educational implications were drawn and directions for future research

were discussed.

Literature Review. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

career serves national economic development and respond to job market demands

for maintaining/increasing productivity and international competitiveness in highly

technological field of employment. Thus, this paper objectives to review previous

research literatures about factors affecting female to participate in STEM careers

and career development theories employed to promote female students’ choice of

STEM careers.

choices of Grade 12 students are an essential aspect of their academic life as they

will shape their future. The study investigated the factors affecting the career

choices of selected Grade 12 students at General De Jesus College. The study

includes themes such as personal interests, skills, practicality, financial stability,

family and friend support, and patriotism. The research utilized a qualitative

descriptive approach to gather data through interviews with selected Grade 12

students at General De Jesus College.

Based on Bughao, A.(2019). Factors Affecting Career Choices Among

Grade 11 Students Based on Hexagonal Model of Personality in General Flaviano

Yengko Senior High School: Basis for Career Development Plan. This research

used the descriptive design. A Career Profile Portfolio and Hexagonal Model of

John Holland Typology of Personality was used to gather the data. The first

instrument measured the Grade 11 students’ choice of the factors that influenced

their career choice, and the last instrument measured the Grade 11 Students’

preferences on career types. The data were subjected to statistical analysis,

weighted mean, percentage and ANOVA. The Grade 11 students of General

Flaviano Yengko Senior High School were the respondents.

According to Lebosana, A. [Link],(2019). Factors Affecting the Track

Preference of Grade 10 Students at Cielito Zamora High School Academic Year

2018-2019. The implementation of the K-12 program is a big step done by the

Department of Education (DepEd) from the Basic Education Curriculum of 2002.

A major change brought about by the K-12 program is the advancement of career

pathways in the Grades 11 and 12 known as “TRACKS”. The tracks were offered

to serve as the students’ first step in planning for their future careers. It gives

options for specialization in Academics, Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, Sports

and Arts and Design fields.

Based on Lepaopao, L. I.,(2019). Factors Affecting Track Preference of

Grade 10 Students of Nagpayong High School SY 2018-2019. The theoretical

framework used was Donald Super’s Career Development Theory and John

Holland’s Theory of Career Choice. The study utilized the descriptive quantitative

method. The study seeks to see if the given five factors such as personality,

parents or relatives, personal interest, job opportunities, and school environment

were significant factors influencing the track preference of the Grade 10

respondents. The adopted survey questionnaire was the main instrument to gather

the data from 324 Grade, 10 respondents.

Based on Tagal, J. (2019). Factors Affecting the Track Choice on Senior

High School of Selected Grade 10 Students in Camp Vicente Lim Integrated

School, SY 2017-2018. This study used a descriptive survey method as Research

Design. Five percent of the total population of Grade 10 students in Camp Vicente

Lim Integrated School were chosen using sample random techniques or fishbowl

method. A survey questionnaire was constructed in light of the problems stated

and aligned with the information needed in the study. The inventory conducted

also used both qualitative and quantitative methods for the data collected

concerning the factors affecting the track choice of the students.

Foreign Studies

According to the study of Ashari, [Link] (2019). This study examines the

relationship between career interest, knowledge, adaptability and maturity in

predicting career choice among 720 students in the Malaysian Skills Certification

System. Career interest, knowledge and adaptability were found to be positively

related to career choice, while career maturity was not significantly related to

career choice. The career choice model was observed to be sufficiently solid and

flexible to incorporate and measure the five constructs (career choice, interest,

knowledge, maturity and adaptability). Importance-performance matrix analysis

indicates that career adaptability is the most important factor in students' career

choices, albeit with the lowest mean scores.

Based on the study of Borchert, M. (2020). Many factors affect career

choices of high school students. Identifying these factors would give parents,

educators, and industry an idea as to where students place most of their trust in

the career selection process. It would also allow students to examine processes

they use for career selection. The literature review has provided recommended

models in career choices. The review of the literature showed that three areas of

a student’s life affect the career choices they make: environment, opportunity, and

personality. All three played varying roles in career outcomes. This study

attempted to identify to what extent these factors played a role in career choice

and which were most important.

According to the study of Dublin, B. C. [Link]. (2020). Choosing a senior high

school career or tracks to pursue is one of the most challenging decision any junior

high school student may undertake. As a response, the objectives of this research

were to investigate junior high school student's career preferences for senior high

school studies, as well as the determinants that may influence their career

selection. Using a stratified random sample technique, a total of one hundred sixty-

six students were chosen at random. To quantify the influence of the indicated

career selection determinants on students' career preferences, the researchers

used a descriptive and predictive correlational research design. The required data

was gathered using a standardized survey questionnaire. Personality, parents, job

opportunities, and interest were found to be statistically significant in influencing

and predicting students' career preferences, out of the five career selection

determinants. In the model, only the peer component (LRT p-value= 0.110) was

shown to be statistically insignificant. Among the career selection determinants,

the variable interest was found to have the strongest influence on students' course

preferences. It can be inferred that diverse career selection factors have

statistically significant effects on students' senior high school career choices.

highlighted the need to strengthen school-based career education in Hungary.

After reviewing the international literature on similar programs, this study reports

on the impact of an innovative, multi-method career education course. It aimed to

support Hungarian high school (ISCED 344) students in grades 10-11 in making

decisions on further education and career choices, and in dealing with related

uncertainties and difficulties, mainly through developing career management

competence. Using a quasi-experimental design, the intervention group of 92

students showed significantly better results on half of the 20 career orientation

variables assessed six months after the end of the intervention of 12 three-quarter-

hour sessions, with low effect sizes compared to the pre-intervention assessment,

and the 96-student control group. In addition to a self-developed questionnaire, the

CDDQ Career Decision-Making Difficulties Questionnaire; and the CFI Career

Factors Inventory were used. The effectiveness of the intervention was

independent of factors such as gender, age, academic performance, and parental

education.

a student's decision-making on the basis of understanding potential. Some of the

problems of current vocational school graduates include lack of self-knowledge;

not being able to decide after graduation, whether to work, study, or self-employed;

lack of understanding of work; not being able to combine potential the job to be

chosen; and have not been able to plan their career. The research aims to

determine the effect of self-efficacy, self-concept, career maturity, vocational

maturity, and career orientation of vocational students in making career decisions.

The sampling technique used is probability sampling. The research subjects were

students of Vocational High School grade XI and XII. The regression test data

analysis techniques to determine the correlation between the independent

variables and the dependent variable.

Local Studies

According to the study of Almario, O.P. (2021). Entitled, Factors affecting

the career choice decision of SHS in Central Luzon. The right career choice for the

students entering the professional education is critical having a high impact on

their professional life and future achievement. This is the turning point: it cannot

be left on intuition preconceived notions, wild imagination or popular concepts. A

misperceived career choice directs all individual efforts and resources into wrong

directions, when not aligned with the expectations; would not only be frustrating

rather than draining of the individual energy and wastage of resources. The re-

alignment is possible, but it has serious implications in terms of time, money, and

motivation.

According to the study of Barrera, K. (2022). Entitled, The Factors Affecting

Career Choice Decisions of Selected Junior High School Students in Calamba

City, Philippines: Input to a Localized Career Guidance Program. This study High

school education is the doorstep towards the future of students, whether they will

pursue further education or enter the world of work. The study aimed to determine

the factors affecting the career choice decisions of selected junior high school

students in Calamba City, Philippines. Using case study as a research design, the

study utilized a survey questionnaire to gather responses of 234 junior high school

students where data gathered were analyzed using descriptive analysis. Results

of the study showed that economic factors, such as financial stability and returns

received strong agreement from students, while social factors got the most

disagreement. Meanwhile, more than half of the respondents are inclined towards

STEM-related degree programs and majority of them eye state university and

colleges (SUCs) as prospective schools after graduation. The findings became the

basis of the proposed localized career guidance program to further guide these

students.

According to the study of Hajilan, K. and Darong, A. (2020). Entitled, Grade

10 Students Career Choice in Sibutu Municipality: A Causal Model. This study

Choosing a career or certain profession must be carefully planned and should be

based on individual interests and preference. However, there are instances that

parents decide or influence their children career according to their preference or

in other case influence by counselling and training opportunities. This study made

use of descriptive and survey method of research among 280 Grade 10 Students

from 1 private and 5 public secondary schools to determine and analyze the factors

that influence student’s career choice. The result of the study showed that the 280

respondents have the abilities and potentials of choosing their careers. Parents

and teachers were “Very Much” influential compared to other variables. The

parent’s monthly income is directly affected by the parent’s occupation. The mother

educational background affects mother’s occupation while father’s job affects

parent’s monthly income. Fathers educational attainment also affect student’s

“Career Choice”, while mother’s educational attainment and father’s occupation

affects the father’s educational attainment. On the basis of causal model presented

in the study, the model that is best fit to students’ career choice is the linear

regression equation model. Furthermore, students’ career choice is greatly

influenced by their preference and abilities. Based on the findings, the researcher

recommends that career guidance programs and services must be stressed out as

an integral part in the six secondary schools considering the best careers that

promises better jobs in the future.

According to the study of Lupas, S. and Farin, E. (2021). Entitled, Factors

Influencing Career Choices Among High School Students in Zambales,

Philippines. The purpose of the study was to determine the factors that influence

the career choices of STEM students in Zambales. A questionnaire was developed

as an instrument to identify attributes that contributes to the career decision-

making process of the student-respondents. The questionnaires were answered

by STEM students in Public Secondary High Schools in Zambales. The findings

revealed that student-respondents gave more importance on their personal career

preferences. Although they still acknowledge the guidance and support of their

families and peers. Their schools also play a significant role in the process of

career decision-making. In terms of the different strategies in making appropriate

career choices- the students fairly recognize plenty of external factors that greatly

contribute in their way of choosing the professions that are in line with their

personal knowledge, skills, and interests. It enables them to identify their short and

long-term goals once they already choose a certain career path. It is necessary to

understand and comprehend that choosing an appropriate career path is a

complex process which needs a thorough evaluation of the different factors that

influence a student’s career decision-making process. Choosing an appropriate

career path is an essential part in students’ lives. It helps them shape their future.

According to the study of Quijano-Pagutayao, A.S. (2024). Entitled, Factors

Influencing Youth Career Degree Choices in Bukidnon: A Study of Senior High

School Students’ Preferences and Motivations. This study was conducted to

examine the environmental factors that influence career degree choices among

the youth in Bukidnon, Philippines. Specifically, this study aims to identify the

students’ characteristics, determine the extent of influence on the decision-making

of the students in their career choices, and identify the reasons that attract the

youth to enroll in an agricultural university or school. The results of this study may

be useful for parents and their children in deciding whether to pursue an agriculture

degree.

Synthesis

Studies on career choices show that factors influencing students' decisions

are complex and multifaceted. Both personal preferences (interests, skills, and

personality) and external influences (family, peers, and job opportunities) play

decision-making process. The availability of resources and support systems within

schools and communities also affects career choices.

Ultimately, effective career guidance programs are essential to help

students navigate these complex factors and make informed decisions about their

future paths. These programs should consider individual student needs and

provide support in exploring different career options and developing relevant skills.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter will discuss what are the instruments will be used to gather

pieces of information that will be needed in this study. Moreover, will discuss when,

where, and how the study will be conducted.

Research Design

The researchers will use a descriptive research design. According to

Creswell (1994), the descriptive method of research is to gather information about

the present existing condition. This will be used to examine the factors affecting

career choices among grade 10 students on Basista National High School.

Source of Data

This part includes the locale of the study and population sampling.

Locale of the study

The researchers will conduct the study within Basista National High School,

Basista, Pangasinan wherein the respondents are grade 10 students who are

enrolled during School Year 2024-2025.

Population Sampling

The researchers will consider the Grade 10 Students in senior high school

of Basista National High School comprising 45 respondents out of 477 Grade 10

students with 230 female and 247 male students of the year 2024-2025 through

Instrumentation and Data Collection

The researchers will be use survey questionnaire on the Factors affecting

career choices among grade 10 students at Basista National High School, This

Survey Interview is designed to assess students’ motivations for choosing their

right career, the skills they have developed, and how these factors have influenced

their career decisions.

First to conduct this study, the researchers will ask permission to our

dearest principal, subject teacher in research and mostly to the respondents which

are the grade 10 students of Basista National High School. Second, the researcher

will prepare some survey questionnaires for the respondents and make some

follow up questions for them. Lastly, the researchers will gather information and

data coming from different sources that conquer this study.

High School. Researchers used tables in presenting the data gathered from the

respondents. In addition, it includes the interpretation of data.

Demographic profile of respondents

This section presents the analysis and interpretation of data relative to the

first research questions. To facilitate the presentation, the sets of data are

tabulated for easy references in their decisions.

The table shows that there is a slight imbalance in the distribution of the

students regarding sex, with a slight advantage in the number of female students

(31 or 68.89%) over the male (14 or 31.33%). This data seems to point out a

slightly higher interest among female that male students to contribute willfully to

our research study. Of the 45 respondents, 31 (68.89%) were female and 14

(31.11%) were male. This shows a significant imbalance in gender representation,

with females being more than twice as numerous as males in the sample.

Factor Affecting career choices among Grade 10 students

This section presents the analysis and interpretation of data relative to the

second research questions, which sought to determine the respondents

awareness of the different Factors affecting career choices among Grade 10

students. To facilitate presentation, the sets of data are tabulated for easy

references in their decisions.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary, the significant findings, the conclusion

and recommendations about the factors affecting career choices among Grade 10

students in Basista National High School.

Summary

The primary objective of this research was to identify the factors affecting

career choices among grade 10 students. The researcher identify the factors

affecting career choices of forty-five (45) grade 10 students.

The research instrument was used in this study is survey questionnaire In

the first part is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age, gender

and section of grade 10 students and for the tools researchers used is percentage

and frequency. For second part, are the factors affecting career choices among

grade 10 students. It’s divided into 3 parts which is friends, family and environment.

The researchers used the descriptive method in explaining, analyzing and

classifying the data. This instrument helped the researcher to describe and

interpret the problem.

Findings

Based on the gathered data, the following are the important findings of the

study

1. The majority of the respondents are aged 13-15 years old (53.33%),

followed by those aged 16-18 years old (42.22%), with a minority aged

19-21 years old (4.44%). This indicates that most Grade 10 students are

within the expected age range for their grade level, suggesting that age

is not a significant factor affecting career choices as it aligns with their

developmental stage.

2. Most of the respondents are female, comprising 68.89%, while male

respondents make up 31.11%. This shows a gender imbalance in the

participants, which could imply that female students are more involved

or interested in career-related discussions, potentially influencing their

career aspirations and decision-making processes.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study the following conclusions were drawn.

1. Based on the result majority of the respondent have a ages to 13-15 years

old while there are few respondent have ages 16-18. Most of the student

are female and majority of the grade 10 have a length of years ranging from

13-15 years old.

2. The study found that among Grade 10 students, the factors influencing

career choices were ranked as follows: Family (average of 4.07), Friends

(average of 3.06), and Environment (average of 3.0). The Family was

identified as the most significant factor, indicating that students possess to

seek guidance or advice from their parents before making important

decisions. Awareness of these influences is crucial for students as they

consider their future careers.

3. The benefits of this study on factors affecting Grade 10 career choices at

Basista National High School benefits students (particularly Grade 10s) by

informing career decisions, parents by highlighting career opportunities,

administrators by evaluating senior high school program effectiveness, and

the school by providing data on student aspirations; future researchers can

also use it as a reference.

Recommendation

1. The grade 10 students should focused only on what are the career that

they really want

2. The grade 10 students should study and have more knowledge about

the career that they choose.

3. The students should ask their elder siblings or parents so they can have

recommendation and knowledge what are the different careers.
