PREFACE

This module discusses the concept of gender and its impacts to society in
general. The first part of the content attempts to differentiate the meaning of the terms
sex and gender, define the concept of SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and
Expression), and identify the different terms/concepts in the gender spectrum
vocabulary.

The meaning of the term gender roles, gender stereotypes, gender equality and
equity, gender discriminations and on how these concepts are embedded in their own
reality, the gender scenarios in the different sectors of the Philippine society,
specifically on the status of women and the LGBT issues, are discussed in the second
part of this module. The SOGIE Bill passed on 17th Congress of the Republic of the
Philippines is also recommended as an additional reading.

Hopefully, through this teaching material, the students will be able to have a
deeper understanding of the concept of gender and its impact to our society, and through
this newly-found comprehension of gender, they may possibly relate its significance to
their own social reality and empower them to be a catalyst of change in the gender
situation of our country.

The authors/compilers reiterate that they do not claim that this work in itself is
faultless. Suggestions and constructive criticism from persons of authority that may
further enhance the contents and presentation of this teaching guide are very much
appreciated. The authors are indebted to all those who helped them prepare the module
and is equally grateful to the authors whose works are used as references.
