Hammurabi's Law Code Legacy

Hammurabi was a significant figure known for creating one of the first written law codes, which emphasized temporal punishment and influenced modern judicial systems. He united Mesopotamia under his rule but lacked religious freedom. Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, was a powerful leader who led Egypt to numerous military victories and instilled national pride through his monumental constructions, although his reign was primarily focused on warfare rather than broader societal issues.

Hammurabi was of great influence to the ancient and modern world.

This person made

one of the first written law codes in existence. Hammurabi claimed to receive the code from
Shamash, the Babylonian god of justice. This law is different from the other ones at the time
because this law focused more on the temporal punishment of the accused. The law of
Hammurabi is comparable to the law of Moses contained in the Torah, a compilation of Hebrew
books of scripture. This is probably his most important accomplishment as it has framed a lot of
the judicial systems today.
Hammurabi, at the time, was a pretty good leader of his people. In one’s own eyes, he
cared enough to write a law code so that his citizens could receive justice. Above this,
Hammurabi after winning wars, was able to unite all of Mesopotamia under his rule, respecting a
few city states. One downside to his rule, it seems, was no religious freedom, but that’s really it.
The picture I chose to include was one of a stele where Hammurabi’s code could be seen in the
cities. I included this because it is one of his greatest achievements.
Ramses II was a very influential figure back then and today. This person led his nation to
victory many times over and instilled more pride into his people through the buildings he left
behind. This leader, also known as Ramses the Great, led his nation to win 15 war campaigns.
This is impressive and influential as that most likely kept his nation from being overrun with the
enemy and taken over.
Ramses was a beneficial leader to the Egyptians because he kept them safe and gave
them something to be proud of. In my analysis, it seems that the reign of Ramses was focused on
wars and pride, and not much else. If Ramses had focused on more aspects pertaining to his
people, then he would have had a better reign. The picture I included was a statue of Ramses. I
included it because it represents him.
