CHARACTERISTICS:
Collimator R302 DACS/A is an automatic system with a set of electronic functions. The
system is designed and constructed for installation on fixed or rotating anode x-ray
tubes (EN601601-1-2 par. 29.202.3). The electronic system provides for the automatic
setting of the field sizes and the stepless adjustment of the selected X-ray field at var-
iable Focus Film Distances (FFD-SID)
The square field is defined by 6 pairs of lead faced shutters contained in the collimator
body. Two pairs of shutters are located near the X-ray focus to control the X-ray beam
and eliminate off-focus radiation. Two pairs are located on the entrance window. The
other two pairs of shutters are positioned near the exit window to provide a sharply de-
fined X-ray field. A key-switch on the rear cover of the collimator allows to select be-
tween the automatic and manual mode of operation. The key can be removed when
the automatic mode has been selected. When the system operates on the lateral fixed
distances in the Manual Mode, two push-buttons on the front panel permit the manual
setting of the FFD (SID).
Direct visualisation of the x-ray field is given by a light beam which correspond to the
X-ray beam, within a tolerance of two percent of the selected distance. The light-field
centre is provided by the intersection of two perpendicular silk-screened lines into the
Lexan window and projected on the image receptor by the light beam.
To activate the light field, press the area marked with the light symbol on the front of
the device. The light will switch on for 30 seconds and then automatically switch off by
an electronic timer.
Average illumination is not less than 160 LUX (FFD 100 cm); edge contrast ratio is min-
imum four to one.

F - INSTALLATION
WARNING:
CAREFULLY FOLLOW THE MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS AND MAKE SURE THAT
THE COLLIMATOR IS CORRECTLY ASSEMBLED. INCORRECT MOUNTING
COULD BE DANGEROUS: IT COULD CAUSE THE COLLIMATOR TO FALL OR TO
OPERATE INACCURATELY
a) Determine the distance from the focal spot to the tube port face from the X-ray tube
housing literature
b) Subtract the resulting distance from 80 mm. (3.15") and determine how many 1.5
mm (0,06") spacers combined with the thickness of the mounting flange will make
up the difference (20mm for the fixed flange; 18mm for the rotating flange; 21.5 mm
for collimator R806D). Allowable tolerance is 1 mm. (0.04").
c) Make sure that the flange is perfectly interchangeable with a Ralco flange -
see Figure 1 - Collimator/X-ray tube Adapter Mounting Flange in this Chapter.
d) Select four bolts of suitable thread (M6 ) and of such a length that they protrude
through the flange and spacers far enough to engage at least 5 threads into the tube
port face. Securely bolt the flange to the tube port face..
WARNING
TO SAFEGUARD THE OPERATOR AND PATIENT AGAINST THE HAZARD OF A
FALLING COLLIMATOR, THE FOLLOWING INDICATIONS MUST BE RESPECTED.
e) Unscrew the four mounting and centering adjustment Allen screws until the four
tongues are withdrawn from the collimator top opening.
See Figure 2 - Collimator/X-ray tube Adapter Mounting Flange in this Chapter..
NOTE:
WHEN UNSCREWING THE ALLEN SCREWS WHICH CONTROL THE TABS, DO NOT USE
FORCE EXCEEDING 0,55 NM.
UNSCREW WITH CARE SO AS NOT TO DAMAGE THE FIXING TABS.
g) Carefully couple the collimator with the tube to ascertain that the primary shutters
have clearance to move in the port opening and in the mounting flange. See Figure
montag_coll-[Link]
h) Place the collimator on the flange. Tighten the four mounting screws equally until the
collimator is held firmly on the tube housing.
See Figure 2 in this Chapter.
The collimator control tabs conform to EN 60601-1- par 28.4. Ralco recommends an
appropriate force which ensures safe locking of the tabs min. 0.75 Nm (± 5 cNm)
WARNING:
MAKE SURE TO TIGHTEN THE M6 ALLEN SCREWS SECURING THE CONTROL TABS.
APPROPRIATE TIGHTENING OF THE 4 ALLEN SCREWS ENSURES SECURE MOUNTING OF
THE COLLIMATOR. TIGHTENING FORCE USED MUST BE GREATER THAN 0.50 NM.
NOTE: IF THE COLLIMATOR IS TO BE MOUNTED ON A ROTATING FLANGE, USE A TIGHT-
ENING FORCE BETWEEN MIN. 0,50 NM AND MAX. 0.75 NM.
i) Check to see that the distance from the collimator housing to the mounting flange is
equal in all directions and that the collimator face is parallel to the axis of the table.

WARNING
PRIOR TO CONNECTING THE COLLIMATOR CHECK THAT SUPPLY IS PROTECTED BY AN EXTERNAL
FUSE 6,3A (SEE THE SPECIFICATIONS).
CABLES (24VAC) USED FOR COLLIMATOR CONNECTION MUST BE SUITABLE FOR PURPOSE AND
COLLIMATOR CURRENT ABSORPTION.(MIN. SECTION 1.5MM2)
THE SYSTEM REQUIRES SCREENED CABLES WITH THE ADDITION OF FERRITE CORES TO AVOID
INTERFERENCE OF ELECTROMAGNETIC DISTURBANCES WITH THE SERVER ELECTRONICS.
CABLES FROM THE SYSTEM TO THE EXTERNAL BOARD MUST BE SCREENED.
THE FERRITE CORES ARE TO BE MOUNTED ON THE CABLES INSIDE THE BOX AS SHOWN IN THE
DRAWING BELOW. FERRITE CORES ARE USED TO ATTENUATE INDUCTION AND IRRADIATION OF
ELECTROMAGNETIC INTERFERENCE.

elettr_302_ACSdhhs.fm
Supply and signals to the collimator must be to 93/42CEE standards. Devices that
supply to the collimator must therefore feature double or reinforced insulation as
provided by the General Standard on Electro medical Equipment CEI62-5 +A2 (EN
60601-1)
The device is electrostatic sensitive consequently all the relating safety
standards must be complied with.
All the system devices listed in the following tables (variable FFD table, variable FFD
stand, fixed lateral FFD, vertical Bucky, lateral Bucky, etc.) are to be connected to the
connectors of the external board.
Correct operation of the system is guaranteed if the return signals from the
Bucky ( if is foreseen) and FFD Potentiometres are not disturbed. Use tripolar
screened cables with the addition of ferrite cores near the connections to the PC
board (external unit)
The signal from the FFD variation control device must be analogic DC, 5VDC max
N.B. All transducers, Potter Bucky (if is foreseen) and FFD Potentiometres, fixed
distance micro switches (if are foreseen), push buttons, etc. are analogic signals and
are supplied by the board. The 5VDC power that supplies the Potentiometres is also
used to supply the microprocessors that operate the collimator. The CAN signals are
at 5V and would be damaged if they were to be connected to other circuits. It is
therefore highly recommended to avoid reading electric signals shared with other
electronic equipment; i.e. do not use analogic signals generated by a unit external
to the system and make sure that the analogic signals are connected via screened
cables.
Analogic signals from the main system need to be used (Volt direct current),
these signals must never exceed 5V max. Any value in excess of this could
damage the board.
Use appropriate cables to connect supply to the external unit (24V AC 5A - minimum
supply transformer power 150 VA - external fuse 6A3) on contacts 83 and 84 (see the
layout of board ASR003) and earth on contact 85. The metal box, besides being a
mechanical protection, serves as electromagnetic shielding.
elettr_302_ACSdhhs.fm
IMPORTANT:
THE 24VAC TO THE BOARD MUST BE SUPPLIED BY AN EX-
TERNAL TRANSFORMER WITH DOUBLE INSULATION ON THE
SECONDARY WINDING. SECONDARY OUTPUTS MUST NOT
BE EARTHED.
The earth connection of the collimator circuit is used to disperse noise or extra voltage
coming from the collimator supply system.
The device that disperses noise is reversible, consequently noise instead of being
eliminated is fed into the system power supply circuit. It is therefore essential that the
earth outlet to which the system is connect be effectively the unipotential protection
point of the system or the room.
SOFTWARE
The Software is developed main in C language: for board ASR002 a Renesas
M16C6N4 microcontroler is used, and microcontroller Renesas M16C29 is used for the
two boards ASR001/C and ASR003.
C Renesas V. 5.40R00 compilor was used to develop the software - HEW development
environment.
A few minor parts of software were developed in Assembler language.
System Power-up
On sysem power-up, board ASR002 software performs a a series of internal self tests
aimed at self-assessment; programme data in the Flash eprom are then analysed after
which CanBus connection with the peripheral boards is initiated.
To verify correct Bus connection of a peripheral board, ASR 002 transmits requests to
each pheripheral: in particular the software version. Receipt of correct data is RAM
stored by ASR002 and data related to all three boards are then displayed sequentially
on the display connected to the main board.
Should board ASR003 (optional item) not be connected, board related data will not be
displayed.
Should ASR003 or ASR001/c not be correctly operational and should CanBus connec-
Sistema_elettronico_302DACS.fm
tion be impossible, the display will not show data related to the two boards.
The system display will read the following information.:
R 3 0 2 D A C S
S e r i a l N u m b e r 1 2 3 4 5
Where 12345 stands for the serial number (see programming of serial number)
The display will then read the HW and SW versions of the three or two boards present
on the system starting from ASR001/C:
A S R 0 0 1
H w 1 . 0 0 S w 1 . 0 4
Then ASR002:
A S R 0 0 2
H w 1 . 0 0 S w 2 . 0 8
The ARS003:
A S R 0 0 3
H w 1 . 0 0 S w 1 . 0 2
Once the initialization process is terminated, the display will read::
C R O S S 0 L O N G 0
D F F 0
Ensligh language:
C R O S S 0 L O N G 0
S I D 0
Following is the readout in the case of inches rather than centimetres:
C R O S S 0 . 0 L O N G 0 . 0
D F F 0 . 0
Filtering level will be shown if a four-position radiological filter is in place.:
C R O S S 0 L O N G 0
D F F 0 0 A l
The system may be set so that a display will read the key status. In this case “closed
padlocke” will be displayed in the second line if the key is in the automatic mode.
C R O S S 0 L O N G 0
D F F 0 0 A l
Sistema_elettronico_302DACS.fm
In this case the value of variable angle between -90° (collimator toward right), 0° (col-
limator upwards), 90° (collimator toward right) will be displayed in the second line:
C R O S S 0 L O N G 0
- 9 0 °D F F 0 0 A l
Should a value of tilt angle be beyond limits, the display shows incorrect value through
blinking.
System Reset
Once CanBus connection is set up, while the versions are being displayed, the control
system will perform a filter reset (if a filter is availble) setting it in filter zero position.
Consequently, according to the control key position, it sets in the manual position or
onhold for automatic controls. Should the key, switching the system in the manual, not
be assembled, the jumper J7 on PCB ASR002 lower part will be removed. At this point,
depending on the current programming, the system will be able to react to controls via
CanBus coming from the external board ASR003 or directly via CanBus by means off
the operator interface.
When the systems starts to receive CanBus controls, the automatic or manual phase
will start depending on the position of the key located at the back of the collimator.
A detail of the collimator configuration phase follows:
Basic Configuration:
System configuration may be performed with three distinct procedures: External cali-
bration, internal calibration and Programming via RS232.
Some of the functions may be programmed in two of these procedures, others in one
only.
Consequently the instructions provided are important in order to have a functional and
efficient system.
System Calibration:
Insert jumper JP4 on the display side of board ASR002. The addition may be made at
any time.
When the jumper is inserted, the display will start reading data related to calibration
Sistema_elettronico_302DACS.fm
phases. In all calibration readouts, the display will present a “closed padlock” or “open
padlock” icon; for permanent storage of data in the non-volatile (Flash) memory of the
system, the icon must be “open padlock” at the end of each calibration phase otherwise
data will not be updated.
It will be possible to unblock the programme with the key in the Manual position (open
padlock); if the key is in the Automatic position, data storage will not be possible (closed
padlocked).
The different calibration phses are performed with the use of three pushbuttons on
board ASR002. The pushbuttons serve to confirm or annull data and, to perform other
display related operations.
The first calibration phase consists in calibration the Cross and Long Potentiometers.

This board may be connected to a radiological collimating system via CanBus interface
both locally (collimator) and generally (System).
The board drives a halogen lamp, a laser pointer and provides a power supply for an
ionisation chamber. It can also handle a cooling fan which it switches on when the tem-
perature sensor detects temperatures in excess of 50°C and switches off when tem-
perature is lowered to 45§°C.
Due to the relatively high power of the halogen lamp, a soft start lighting cycle has been
developed in order to avoid a too high current inrush due to a cold lamp filament, that
in turns, can be responsible for its damage. By greatly limiting the resulting starting cur-
rent we also obtain a better general result for the whole system. A bypass relay has
been added which acts on Lamp On conditions and allows to use energy that would
otherwise be dispersed under the form of heat.

Data related to time intervals (soft start lighting, fixed light, fan off) are relayed to the
system via CAN BUS interface including power-up and power down data for possible
accessories.

The following 2 bytes (D1, D2) represent respectively light-on time in hundredths of
seconds to be selectedbetween 1 and 60 seconds. The following byte D3 describes
the ramp time where the soft start time in tenths of seconds included in a single
byte. The laser output remains activated for the whole period.
The position related field is updated progressively.
02h Laser on
Can be used to turn on laser output at any time.
Led Operation
The green led (position D8 on the board) flashes at 1 second intervals; a different flash-
cycle or no flashinig indicates bad or faulty mains sync which, in turn, indicates a faulty
board or connection to a DC supply rather than AC.
The red led (position D7 on the board) flickers briefly at every valid CAN BUS frame
detected.
Customisation:
By using a serial adapter (not supplied), a set of customised controls may be sent via
connector J4 as follows:
Power-down the board, connects the serial adapter to J4 and the serial adapter to an
ASCII terminal (or to a computer with a terminal emulator programme). Set the follow-
ing:
• Baud rate 9600
• 1 stop bit
• No parity
• Power-up the board
ASR_001.fm
Base_id = 0x540
The value on the right of equal sign will be assigned
When customisation is terminated, power-down and remove the connections. The new
parameters will become active on restart.

Description:
This board operates the movements of the collimator shutters for image formatting via
CAN BUS interfacing; it also provides for filter positioning according to need.
It independently performs calculations necessary to compensate for FFD variation.
Stepper motor operation occurs through the splitting of the actual motor step into 16
further divisions.
Unlike whole step operation in which each motor winding may or may not be supplied
to attain correct position, step splitting is obtained by supplying the windings with a cur-
rent proportional to the sign and co-sign of the angle corresponding to the fraction of
the required step.
Since it is assumed that the windings
are electrically orthogonal, the vector
supplied is calculated as sen (or cos) of
90°/f where f is the fraction of the re-
quired step. This relationship is illustrat-
ed by the figure on the right.
collimatori\ACS\fig1_ASR
The board can also control power-off to each single motor as an alternative to so-called
“seize locking”. For each single motor 4 levels of maximum torque (relative) are possi-
ble between 50% and 100%. The value of maximum torque (absolute) is unique for all
motors.
These Parameters are internally run by the control software.
By using these values correctly we obtain maximum torque during controlled shutters
movements; torque of “seize-locking” is then set at a much lower value to avoid shut-
ters skidding from position and also to reduce dissipation both in the motor and activa-
tion.
The motors that govern long and cross shutters have a feedback system composed of
a precision Potentiometres coupled mechanically to the related movements and appro-
priately digitalised by a digital analogical 10-bit converter.
collimatori\acs\grafico_ACS.gif
A low-pass digital FIR filter provides for the removal of electric noise on the signal that
needs to be digitalized without excessive sacrifice to system response speed. Further-
more, the same filter is used to artificially extend conversion resolution.
The activation speed of motors governing the shutters when operating in the automatic
mode varies proportionally to the distance to be covered. The activation speed of the
motors in the manual mode may be factory-set during system configuration.
The board detects when the knobs are forced by the operator when controlling long and
cross movements beyond a pre-set limit. In this case “seize locking” activated to avoid
shutter skidding is removed and, the corresponding movement, is freed until the sys-
tem detects that a new stable position has been reached by the shutters - at this point,
seize-lock torque is re-applied.

In this configuration the collimator is slave; i.e: it responds to outside controls but does
not generate spontaneous messages.
Controls sent to an external terminal must terminate with double characters “\r\n”(re-

Description:
Board ASR003 is an extension of the radiological system. It provides interfacing with
the collimator which features board ASR002 and analogic signals coming from other
system devices.
It operates via CAN BUS with a Ralco proprietary protocol.
The user end features 32 digital inputs, 8 analogic inputs and 10 relay outputs.
So as to adapt to different devices, digital inputs are fixed for optioinsulation so as to
allow connection also with devices that supply output control voltages (typical range
12-32 Vdc).
collimatori\acs\asr003_1.gif
Since the input signal sometimes comes from a voltage-free contact, the board fea-
tures a number of pins to which an external supply may be connected. Alternatively
these pin may be connect to a voltage incoming from board ASR003 itself by simply
connecting pin M79 to pin M80 and pin M81 to pin M82.
The available voltage is not taken upstream of the voltage regulator but downstream of
the fuse and rectifiers bridge.
The type of software applied determines the function of each input.
ASR003_descrizione.fm
The analogic inputs are designed mainly for connection to 1Kohm potentiometers.
collimatori\acs\asr003_2.gif
Ingresso analogico/analogic Input
In this case the input range will be reduced with respect to the digitalization capacity of
the digital/ analogic convertor on the microprocessor. However, at the same time the
board will be better protected against wrong Potentiometres connections.
Other protection elements have also been added since, here too, it is possible that the
user does not employ Potentiometres but supplies an analogical signal directly.
The main purpose of these inputs is to furnish the collimator with the cassette sizes that
may be present or, to supply information related to focus-film/focus- floor distances (de-
pending on the configuration).
In general, non linearity introduced by the protection elements is contained and ade-
quate to their functions. However, should a greater degree of precision be required
(such as in the case of focus-film/focus-floor signals) we suggest that a voltage propor-
tional to the case be supplied which is included between 0 and 6 Vdc so as to make the
most of the convertor range.
Higher voltages that could occur from incorrect connections, up to 12V, will not damage
the input.
the 10 output relays each have a voltage-free exchange contact and may consequently
be adapted to a number of different configurations. Their use depends on the software
applied.
The CanBus communication interface is opto-insulated and needs external supply with
a direct voltage between 9 and 32Vdc.
In this case also, voltage for interface supply may be drawn from any one of the radio-
logical system supply sources or from an external source.
This type of connection is recommended when there are problems related to the pres-
ence of differences in earth potential within the system. See the typical connections di-
agrams that follow in this section.
ASR003_descrizione.fm
This board also supplies the go-ahead to programme some of the radiological system
parameters. In this case a jumper is required on the board as shown in the following
photograph.
collimatori\acs\asr003_3.jpg
The white line and black arrow indicate where to position the jumper on board ASR003;
this requires the connection of pins 2 &4 of connector J3.
No other configuration must be employed otherwise permanent damage might be
caused to the board itself.
The jumper must be removed according to indications provided by the collimator dis-
play.
J3 is a utility connector used for in-factory programming of board ASR003.
Some software versions could also cover the use of a serial RS232 port located on con-
nector J2 for a possible OFF-LINE parameterization of the board itself.

System calibration is the process by which the collimator is programmed to operate
within the system on which it is installed.
The operator should calibrate the collimator when installing the unit according to the
different operation options that are required to be selected.
Calibration may be started by one of the following methods:
a) Setting a jumper on J3 of Board ASR003 between pins 2-4 (Warning: to start the
calibration process it is sufficient to set the signal on pin 4 at earthing value)

WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES REQUIRE THAT X-RADIATION BE PRODUCED.
TAKE ADEQUATE PRECAUTIONS TO SEE THAT NO PART OF THE HUMAN BODY
IS EXPOSED TO X-RADIATION, DIRECT OR INDIRECT.
If the x-ray beam cannot be oriented vertically, then make provision by using clamps,
masking tape, etc. as required to place the test objects and image receptor at the spec-
ified FFD (SID) and perpendicular relative to the x-ray beam as described in the follow-
ing procedures:
NOTE: THE HEEL EFFECT WILL CAUSE THE FIELD TOWARD THE CATHODE TO BE SLIGHTLY
LESS SHARP THAN ON THE OTHER THREE SIDES . THIS IS NORMAL AND CANNOT BE CORRECT-
ED BY ADJUSTMENT. IN ADDITION, AN X-RAY TUBE OF 12 ° OR LESS TARGET ANGLE WILL PRO-
DUCE AN ASYMMETRICALLY SHAPED FIELD WHEN A LARGE FIELD SIZE IS USED AT SHORT FFD
(SID), BECAUSE OF ANODE CUT-OFF EFFECT. THIS IS NORMAL AND MAY NOT BE CORRECTED
BY ADJUSTMENT.

ity (Hvl)). The hvl in millimeters of aluminium obtained during the test must be greater
or equal than the values listed in the above mentioned table.
a) Direct the central x-ray beam perpendicular and in the center of a RAD-Check in-
strument. Determine the exact distance from the x-ray tube focal spot to the window
of the collimator (273 mm - 10.75"). Place the input area of the RAD-CHECK at an
equal distance from the collimator window. Collimate the beam to an area slightly
larger than the detector.
b) Select a tube potential of 100 kVp and appropriate mA and seconds, with no added
filtration in the beam make an exposure and record the reading. Using a set of sev-
eral sheets of 1100 Aluminium Alloy, each having a thickness of 0.5 or 1.0 mm, tape
the filtration to the window of the collimator. Make an exposure for each increments
of filtration and record the reading.
c) Plot the exposure readings (log scale) versus the total added filtration thickness on
semilog paper; see the sample hereunder.
d) Verify that HLV values in the useful beam for the above specific tube potential is not
less than the values shown in Table 1.

THE COLLIMATOR TO OVERHEAT IN THE AREA NEAR THE LAMP.
The collimator is normally operated by activating the pushbutton on the front panel to
switch the light field ON.
The collimator has been designed to operate as follows:
• Supply constantly connected during operation of the equipment.
• Lamp ON time: ON time is pre-set in factory to 30s (tol.20%).
• A normal lamp ON / OFF cycle is established at 2 sequences followed by 4 minutes
to allow for cooling (i.e. 1 minute ON / 4 minutes OFF)
• The field is set automatically by external electronics. For field reduction use the
motor control pushbuttons on the front panel and check the dimension on the dis-
play or using the light field.
