Chapter 2: The First Step

Marissa woke up earlier than usual the next day. Her alarm buzzed at 5:30 AM, and instead of
hitting the snooze button, she swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood up. The room
was still dark, but there was something inside her that told her today was important. The weight
of the phone call she made the night before settled in her chest, making her heartbeat quicken.
She was finally stepping into the unknown.

She had spent weeks preparing—researching, reading, watching videos, but now it was time for
action. She grabbed her phone and dialed the number on the card the man had given her. It was a
simple move, but it felt like a monumental step. She was no longer the girl working at a coffee
shop. She was about to enter the world of the people who made things happen.

"Hello?" the man answered, his voice as smooth and confident as it had been before.

"Hi, it's Marissa. We spoke a while ago," she said, trying to keep her voice steady, though the
excitement in her chest made her pulse race. "I... I’m ready. I want to learn. How do I start?"

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, and she wondered if he would change his
mind, if he would dismiss her or tell her it was too late.

Instead, he said, “Good. First thing you need to understand is that the road you’re about to walk
is going to test you. You’ll be asked to think differently than everyone else. You’ll have to be
uncomfortable, take risks, and sometimes you’ll fail. But that’s part of the process. Success isn’t
a straight line.”

Marissa felt a knot form in her stomach. She had always been a bit of a perfectionist—failure
wasn’t something she had ever embraced. But she knew what he said was true. If she wanted to
be wealthy, she couldn’t be afraid to fail. Failure was a stepping stone, not the end.

“I’m ready for whatever it takes,” she replied, determination clear in her voice.

He chuckled softly. “That’s the spirit. Alright, the first thing we’re going to do is start you on a
business venture. Something small but powerful. We’ll test the waters, see how you handle
making decisions, taking risks, and learning how money flows. I’m going to give you a few
names of people who are looking for help with their businesses. Your job is to approach them,
offer something valuable, and make your first deal. It’s not about the money right now—it’s
about learning how to work with others and leverage your skills.”

Marissa’s head spun. “Wait—are you saying I should just… offer help? For free?”

The man’s voice was firm. “Yes. You’re not getting paid for your time yet. This isn’t about
money right now. This is about gaining experience and building trust. When you offer real value,
people will remember you. And that’s where the money comes in. Trust me.”
Her instincts told her to resist. After all, who worked for free? But she had a gut feeling he was
right. This was the starting point. This was the hustle that would set her on the path to greatness.

“Okay, I’m in. What’s next?”

“Great. I’ll send you the names and contact info. Reach out, start conversations, and think about
how you can help them. Just don’t rush. Listen first. Make them see you as a partner, not just
someone offering free help. That’s where the real power lies.”

Marissa felt her heart pounding in her chest as she wrote down the instructions, her mind already
running wild with possibilities. What could she offer? How could she prove her value?

She spent the rest of the day contacting the people the man had recommended. They were small
business owners—mostly online entrepreneurs in various fields, from fitness coaches to small
tech startups. She didn’t ask for money, but instead, she offered to help them with marketing,
brainstorming ideas, and even offering advice on improving their customer service. She wasn’t
exactly an expert in any of those areas yet, but she knew how to research, and she knew how to
listen.

By the time she sent her last email, it was late, and she felt both exhausted and exhilarated. She
had done something—she had taken action. The first step was the hardest, but now she had taken
it.

The next few days were a whirlwind. Some people responded with curiosity, others with
hesitation, and a few didn’t respond at all. But one response stood out. It was from a woman
named Lena, who ran a boutique online clothing store. Lena had just launched a new product
line, and sales weren’t going as well as she had hoped. She liked the idea of having someone
help with marketing and was intrigued by Marissa’s offer.

They set up a meeting for the next day.

Marissa spent the entire night preparing. She studied Lena’s website, her social media profiles,
and even her competitors. By the time the meeting rolled around, she felt ready. She wasn’t
going to just pitch her ideas—she was going to show Lena how she could help her business
grow.

The Zoom call began, and Marissa felt a surge of nervous energy. But when Lena appeared on
the screen, smiling warmly, Marissa’s nerves settled. She knew this was her moment.

“Hi, Lena! It’s so great to meet you,” Marissa said, keeping her tone confident.

Lena smiled back. “Hi, Marissa! I’ve read your email, and I’m intrigued by your offer. Tell me
what you think could help my business.”

For the next thirty minutes, Marissa listened carefully to Lena’s struggles, took notes, and
proposed a marketing strategy that included better engagement with influencers, a revamped
social media plan, and an email campaign to reach out to past customers. She even suggested a
few tweaks to Lena’s website for a more user-friendly experience.

At the end of the call, Lena looked impressed. “I can’t believe you’ve come up with all this in
such a short amount of time,” she said. “You clearly know your stuff, and I think we could work
together. Let’s give this a shot.”

Marissa’s heart leaped. This was it. She had made her first deal—not for money, but for trust.
She had proven herself capable.

As the call ended, Marissa leaned back in her chair, feeling a rush of accomplishment. She had
taken the first step—and it had worked.

The road ahead was still long, but now, she could see the possibilities more clearly than ever.
This was just the beginning. And Marissa Montgomery was determined to turn every opportunity
into gold.
