The Impact of Social Networks on Mental Health Among HUFLIT Students: A Study of
Screen Time and Self-Esteem
Introduction
Nowadays, social media plays a vital role in daily life in conveying a new way of people
interaction and communication. With the fast - approaching of new technology and many
online networks, people tend to use it with the aim of gaining academic and personal
development. Furthermore, these online platforms have many advantages such as searching
for information, creating online relationships, and entertainment purposes. However, having
lack of knowledge of social media usage, it has raised many consequences that could lead to
low self-confidence and potential risks in self-development. Many studies in the past have
shown that the more time people spend on virtual information on their devices, the more it
affects different aspects such as anxiety, depression and self-esteem. The groups that are
easily affected are young adults, especially university students. While in Vietnam, social
media usage is still rising gradually, with the victims are students at HUFLIT spending
significant amounts of time on these platforms. To minimize the unpredicted consequences, it
is important to raise people awareness by showing how it has an impact on students’
performance, mental health and self-esteem.
The presence of overusing social media could lead to many drawbacks such as: low
self-esteem, lack of motivation, and productivity among university students. Many students
do not acknowledge about how the screen time will influence their confidence and mental
well-being, often leading to increased stress, comparison between unrealistic standards and
themselves. As the results, academic performance is affected, as students who are struggling
in having low self-confidence may lack the motivation to class participation, complete
assignments, or engage in productive learning activities. Due to the rising concerns about
these issues, as it leads to negative effects on students’ mindset and psychological well-being,
it is necessary to acknowledge what the impacts are on the students. This research aims to
clarify the relationship between social media usage and self-esteem among HUFLIT students,
listing the importance of being responsible to social media usage. By examining this issue,
the study aims to gain better observation, understanding and raise awareness about how social
media habits influence mental health, providing solutions to prevent the downfall of students’
academic success and potential risks towards academic achievement.
This study focuses on showing how social media screen usage will affect HUFLIT students'
self-confidence and psychological mental well-being. By going through students' social
media usage and examining its influence on their behavior that contributes in building the
student’s confidence, this research will provide valuable observation and comments on their
overusing habits. The findings will be used as evidence to strengthen how the link between
social media and students’ self-esteem works, ensuring that not only students but anyone can
participate in online sites for many reasons without any loss, and stop the risks that can
potentially origins from using technology and its features. From that, this research hopes to
maintain better social media usage mindset, helping students to stay at a positive status while
aiming for their academic and personal goals.
