Combinatorics: Permutations and Combinations

The document is a mathematics project on combinatorics, specifically focusing on permutations and combinations. It includes definitions, formulas, and examples illustrating how to calculate permutations and combinations in various scenarios. The project concludes with the calculation of the number of ways to form a committee from a group of people.

a. Taken r at a time
PERMUTATION - A permutation is an arrangement of
objects in a definite order. The members or elements of sets
are arranged here in a sequence or linear order.

1. Permutation, taken r at a time

𝑛!
P(n,r) = (𝑛−𝑟)! ; 𝑛 ≥ 𝑟

Example:
Tan is choosing 3 flavors of his chicken wings out of 15 list of flavors. In how
many ways can Tan choose 3 of his flavors?

Solution:
𝑛!
P (n,r) = (𝑛−𝑟)!
n = 15
r= 3
15!
𝑃 (15,3) =
(15 − 3)!
15!
𝑃 (15,3) =
12!
15 ∙ 14 ∙ 13 ∙ 12!
𝑃 (15,3) =
12!
𝑃 (15,3) = 15 ∙ 14 ∙ 13
𝑃 (15,3) = 2730
THEREFORE: There is 2730 ways Tan can choose of his 3 flavors for his chicken
wings out of 15 list of flavors.
2. Permutation, taken all at a time
P(n,n) = n!

Example:
How many ways can 6 students arrange themselves in taking a class picture?

Solution:
P(n,n) = n!
P(6,6) = 6!
P (6,6) = 6*5*4*3*2*1
P(6,6) = 720 ways

Therefore, there are 720 ways for the 6 students to arrange themselves to taking a
class picture.
3. Distinguishable Permutation,
𝑛!
𝑃 =
𝑝! 𝑞! 𝑟!

Example:
Find the number of permutations of the letters of the words REFERENCE.
𝑛!
𝑃 = 𝑝!𝑞!𝑟!
R= 2
E= 4

Solution:
9!
𝑷=
2! 4!
9∗8∗7∗6∗5∗4∗3∗2∗1
𝑷=
2∗4∗3∗2∗1
𝟗∗𝟖∗𝟕∗𝟔∗𝟓
𝑷 =
𝟐
15120
𝑷=
2
𝑃 = 7560

Therefore, there are 7560 permutations of the letters of the word

REFERENCE.
4. Circular Permutation
P = (n – 1)!
Example:
In how many ways can arrange the 8 horses in a pole of merry-go-round.
Solution:
P = (n – 1)!
P = (8 – 1)!
P = 7!
P = 5040 ways

Therefore, there are 5040 ways to arrange the 8 horses in the merry-go-round pole.
COMBINATION - A combination is a mathematical technique that determines the
number of possible arrangements in a collection of items where the order of the
selection does not matter.
𝑛!
𝑛𝐶𝑟 =
𝑟! (𝑛 − 𝑟 )!

Example:
In how many ways can the Arnis committee consisting of 5 members can be
formed from 9 people?

𝑛!
Solution: 𝑛𝐶𝑟 = 𝑟!(𝑛−𝑟)!

n=9 r=5

n!
C(n, r) =
r! (n − r)!

9!
C(9,5) =
5! (9 − 5)!

9!
C(9,5) =
5! (4)!

9! 8! 7! 6! 5! 4! 3! 2! 1!
C(9,5) =
5! 4! 3! 2! 1! 4! 3! 2! 1!

362880
C(9,5) =
2880

C(9,5) = 126 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠

THEREFORE: there are 126 ways can be formed the Arnis committee.
