INSTRUCTION: Read the passage carefully, then choose the correct
answer.
David and Sam were walking together in a forest. They made a pact to lookout
for each other. They were halfway through the forest when they heard a
frightening sound. They turned around and sure enough, there was a bear
lumbering slowly towards them. They froze in their tracks. Bears normally leave
people if they stay still.
However, the bear kept on coming. In panic, David simply ran off and climbed
up a tree. Sam did not have time to do the same, so he just laid down on the
ground and stayed still. The bear came to Sam. He went closer to Sam's head and
sniffed him. Sam stayed still as a statue.
After a while, the bear lumbered off. David, who had been watching, climbed
down when he was certain that the bear was gone. He went up to Sam, who was
walking away. David asked "I saw the bear go near your ear. Did he say

SUMMARY
INSTRUCTION: Read the following passage and answer the questions on it
The use of money for transactions was the most common, though this was
probably pre-dated by barter. Barter, as a system of exchange was not as
dominant as many anthropologists would want us to believe and the so-called
dumb trade whereby traders exchanged goods without any verbal
communication was strange in many parts of Nigeria.
The country's commercial transactions were multilateral and too widespread for
barter to cope with.
There were different kinds of currencies. Cowries, brass, iron and copper objects
were commonly used. Three varieties of currencies were however, widespread.
The first was cloth currency. The use of cotton stripes was reported in Borno.
The second was metal currency. Copper and iron rods were used in different
parts of Nigeria. Manillas, Currencies made of brass and copper, were widely
used in Niger Delta. The third variety of currency was cowrie shells. The use of
cowries had a long antecedent and it probably spread at different times, from one
area to another until it became popular throughout the country.
The cowrie had a number of advantages. It made exchange possible over a wide
territory since it was used in many places. Its small size made it easy to carry,
though it was bulky for large transactions. The cowrie served as an effective
measure of value and a unit of account which made it convenient to know the
value of one form of goods in relation to another and to fix prices to all kinds of
products. Finally, the cowrie could not be forged.

Cake decoration using flowers embodies cultural expressions such as beauty, tradition, and social celebration. It reflects cultural values around aesthetics and ceremony, demonstrating how creativity in baking practices conveys deeper social meanings .
The diverse currency systems, including cloth, metal, and cowries, suggest a complex economy that required multiple exchange methods to suit different regions and transaction sizes. These systems enabled a wider reach of economic activities and facilitated trade in both local and wider markets .
Different currencies like cowries, metal rods, and cloth evolved regionally due to varying commercial needs, such as availability of materials and ease of trade over large territories. This adaptation signifies an intelligent response to logistical and economic challenges, optimizing trade efficiency .
David's impulsive flight exemplifies a survival instinct driven by fear, while Sam's calm decision to play dead shows reasoning under duress. This contrast highlights how split-second decisions can be influenced by personal tendencies toward risk and reflection .
Natural flowers are preferred for their aesthetic and fragrance properties, enhancing the visual appeal and aromatic experience of cakes. They add authenticity associated with peace and love, elevating the event's significance and aligning with cultural sentiments .
The encounter illustrates the test of true friendship and loyalty under pressure. David's decision to flee highlights self-interest in contrast to mutual support, while Sam's response implies a deeper understanding of loyal companionship, as symbolized by the bear's "whisper" on choosing friends wisely .
Sam's reaction reflects the instinct for self-preservation and the knowledge that remaining still can sometimes be the safest option. By choosing to lie down and stay motionless, he avoided provoking the bear, demonstrating a calculated risk based on survival instincts .
The passage points out that barter, though prevalent, was not efficient for widespread multilateral transactions. Currency systems like cowrie shells provided advantages like ease of transport and preventing forgery, supporting broader economic development and helping overcome barter's limitations .
The passage educates on the historical economic practices in early Nigeria, illustrating how different societies adapted currency systems for effective trade. It underscores the evolution from barter to specific currency forms that met regional economic demands .
Historical currency systems reflect a society's values in terms of resource accessibility, trade practices, and economic priorities. The choice of material—such as cowries for their portability and uniformity, or metal for durability—demonstrates cultural priorities for reliability and standardization in trade .
