Introduction - LALA

In today's digital age, social media plays a crucial role in shaping

communication, particularly among students. With many Grade 7
students actively engaging on platforms like Facebook and TikTok,
these tools offer opportunities for practicing English in an informal
setting. However, this trend raises questions about the impact of
social media on their language skills, including vocabulary,
grammar, pronunciation, and overall fluency.

Limitations of the Study- LALA

While this study aims to provide valuable insights, it is subject to
certain limitations:

Self-Reported Data: Surveys are based on students' self-

assessments of their communication skills in English, which may not
accurately reflect their abilities because of biases or over- or
underestimated.

Sample Size: The results may not be applicable to other

populations due to the relatively small number of participants,
which will be based on a sample of KCCF students in Grade 7.

Time Constraints: (time limit/deadline) Data collection is restricted

to a specific academic period, which may not fully capture long-term
changes or trends in students' communication skills.

Data collection is only done during a certain time, like

one school term or one semester. This means we might not
see how students' communication skills change over a
longer time, like after one or two years. Because we are
only looking at a short time, we might miss seeing bigger
improvements or problems in how students use English over
time.

This is important because communication skills can

improve slowly or change as students practice more, and
if we only look for a short time, we might not get the
full picture.

Focus on English Communication: The study concentrates solely

on English language communication skills, and does not address the
impact of social media on other languages or subjects.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

LALA
Foreign
The literature highlights the influence of social media on students'
English communication skills, both positive and negative. Social
media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube have
revolutionized communication, particularly among young users, by
providing informal and accessible ways to practice English. Studies
such as those by Fadil (2021) and Winarto (2019) emphasize the
growth in vocabulary and fluency through casual communication but
also caution against the use of informal grammar and slang, which
could hinder formal academic writing.

Research, including that of Tran-Duong et al. (2023) and Halim and

Sulistyo (2019), points out that social media offers real-life contexts
for language learning, boosting students' confidence and reducing
anxiety. However, this informal practice might negatively affect
accuracy and proper language usage in formal settings, as
supported by Al Ghazali (2020).

Local
Local studies in the Philippines, such as those by Cruz and Santos
(2020) and Garcia (2021), confirm that students gain confidence in
English through social media but often struggle with grammar and
formal communication. Bautista and Perez (2019) and Reyes (2020)
also found that informal language from social media seeps into
students' academic writing, affecting grammatical accuracy.
Overall, social media can enhance communication skills, particularly
fluency and confidence, but may also challenge the mastery of
formal English, as supported by studies like Torres and Marasigan
(2021) and Delos Santos (2019).
STATISTICAL TREATMENT & DATA

SPSS software stands for **Statistical Package for the Social

Sciences** software. It's a program designed to help researchers
and students organize, analyze, and interpret data, especially in
fields like social science, education, and business.

SPSS is a computer program used to help people understand

numbers and data. It's like a big calculator, but much smarter. It
helps to organize data, analyze it, and find patterns or answers from
it. For example, if a teacher wants to know how many students like
math and how many like science, they can use SPSS to easily count
and compare the numbers.

Researchers and students use SPSS to solve problems or to learn

more about what their data says.

Statistical Treatment of Data LALA

With only 35 Grade 7 students at KCCF, the entire population will be

included in the study. Total population sampling ensures that the
study captures all available data, and the statistical analyses will be
adjusted for the smaller sample size. The methodology remains
descriptive-correlational, focusing on the relationship between social
media usage and communication skills.
1. Why do you propose to conduct this study?
I/We want to find out how social media affects how Grade 7 students
use and improve their English communication.

2. What is the rationale, reason for conducting your study?

Social media is used by many students today, so it’s important to
know if it helps or hurts their English skills, especially in speaking
and writing.

3. What will be the contributions of your study’s relevant

field?
This study will help teachers understand how social media can affect
English learning and communication. It will also show if social media
can be used as a learning tool or if it creates bad habits in language
use.

4. What is your motivation for conducting this study?

I’m curious about how often students use social media and if it helps
them learn better English or if it causes problems like using slang or
incorrect grammar.

5. Who will benefit most from this research study?

Teachers, students, and parents will benefit from this study.
Teachers will learn how to guide students in using social media in a
positive way, and students will understand how it affects their
communication.

6. What is the most relevant theory of your research?

7. How do you come up with your instruments?

I will create a survey with questions about how often students use
social media and how confident they are in using English. I will also
test their writing and speaking skills.

8. How will you validate your instruments?

I will ask my teachers and classmates to check the survey questions
and make sure they are clear and accurate. I will also test the
questions on a small group before giving them to everyone.

9. How do you plan to present, analyze and interpret the

data you collect?
I will organize the answers in charts and tables to show patterns. I
will compare the students’ social media use with their English test
results to see if there is a connection.

10. What statistical treatment will you apply?

I will use percentages and averages to compare how social media
use affects students' English skills. I might also use correlation to
see if there is a relationship between the two.

11. Do you have a blank spot/blind spot? Explain/Elaborate

it.
One possible blind spot is not knowing exactly how students use
social media. I might not be able to see if they are using it for
educational purposes or just for fun.

12. Are there sub-variables like mediating and moderating

variables in your study? What are those?
Yes. A sub-variable could be the **type of social media** used (like
Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok) and the **amount of time** spent
on social media. These could affect how students’ English skills are
influenced.

13. Why do you choose this topic? What are the main
issues/debates in this area?
I chose this topic because social media is everywhere, and it’s
important to know if it helps or hurts students’ English skills. Some
people say it helps with learning new words, while others say it
causes bad habits like using slang or short forms.

14. What do you think will be the main ethical issues of

conducting this research?
The main ethical issue is ensuring the privacy of the students. I
need to make sure their answers are kept private and that they feel
comfortable sharing their opinions.

15. What do you think will be the practicability of your

research?
This research is practical because many students use social media
every day, and teachers need to know how it affects learning.

16. What is your thesis all about?

My thesis is about how social media influences the English
communication skills of Grade 7 students, focusing on their writing,
speaking, and understanding of English.

17. What prompted you to propose this study? (Problem

Scenario)
I noticed that many students use social media a lot, but some of
them struggle with proper English grammar and communication. I
want to see if social media is the reason for that.

18. What's your statement of the problem?

19. What legal basis do you have? (Support/RRL)

My study is supported by previous research that shows how social
media can influence language learning, both positively and
negatively.

20. What are the variables in your study? (Independent and

Dependent Variables)
- **Independent variable:** Social media use (time spent and type
of social media)
- **Dependent variable:** English communication skills (writing,
speaking, and grammar)

21. What research methods will you use?

I will use surveys and tests to gather data. The surveys will ask
about social media use, and the tests will measure English skills.

22. Who will be the respondents?

The respondents will be Grade 7 students from a local school.

23. What sampling method will you use?

24. How will you gather data?

I will give out surveys and conduct English language tests to collect
data from the students.

25. Do you think your proposed study is timely and useful?

(Significance of the study)

Yes, this study is timely because many students use social media
every day. Social media, like Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram, is part
of their daily life. It’s important to understand if using these
platforms helps them improve their English, or if it causes problems
like poor grammar or spelling mistakes.
This study is useful because it can help teachers know if social
media is something they should include in their lessons, or if they
need to help students avoid bad habits from it. It can also help
students understand how to use social media in a way that improves
their learning, especially in writing and speaking English. By
studying this, we can help improve English communication for
students and make social media a positive tool for learning.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The potential benefits of using social media as a learning tool include increased vocabulary and fluency, real-life language contexts, enhanced confidence, and reduced anxiety in communication. These advantages can make English practice more engaging and relevant for students . However, drawbacks include the risk of developing poor grammar habits, over-reliance on informal language, and difficulties in formal writing tasks, as social media often promotes less structured language use . Teachers need to guide students to use social media constructively while mitigating its negative aspects .

The primary thesis of the study is that social media significantly influences the English communication skills of Grade 7 students, particularly focusing on their writing, speaking, and understanding of English . The research was prompted by the observation that many students frequently use social media but struggle with proper English grammar and communication. This indicates a potential link between their social media usage patterns and their language skills, motivating the study .

The study identifies Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube as significant platforms influencing Grade 7 students' English language skills . The proposed sub-variables for analysis include the type of social media used and the amount of time spent on these platforms. These sub-variables are considered crucial in understanding the extent and nature of the influence social media has on students' communication skills .

The study employs a descriptive-correlational methodology, utilizing surveys to assess social media usage and English language tests to evaluate communication skills. SPSS software is used for organizing, analyzing, and interpreting data . Data validity is addressed through expert review of survey instruments and pre-testing them on a small group. A noted blind spot is the lack of detailed insight into students' specific uses of social media beyond what the survey captures .

The study suggests that social media enhances fluency and confidence in English communication among Grade 7 students by providing informal and accessible practice opportunities. However, it may also lead to challenges in grammatical accuracy and formal writing due to the informal language commonly used on these platforms . The limitations of the research include reliance on self-reported data, which may be biased; a small sample size from a specific school, limiting generalizability; and data collection restricted to a short academic period, which might not capture long-term trends or changes in skills .

Informal grammar and slang prevalent on social media can seep into students' academic writing, adversely affecting grammatical accuracy and formal communication skills. Cruz and Santos (2020) and Garcia (2021) found that while social media can boost students' confidence, it also leads to struggles with formal language use. Other studies, such as those by Bautista and Perez (2019) and Reyes (2020), confirm that these informal language habits compromise students' proficiency in academic settings .

The study employs statistical methods such as calculating percentages and averages, as well as correlation analysis to interpret data. SPSS software is used to organize and analyze these statistics. These methods help identify patterns and relationships between social media usage and students’ English skills, allowing researchers to draw insights into how different aspects of social media activity might impact language learning outcomes .

The researchers plan to ensure ethical standards by maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of students' responses. They will make it clear that participation is voluntary and that students' identities will not be linked to the data gathered. This approach fosters a sense of security and encourages honesty in responses, essential for collecting accurate data. Ethical considerations like these are crucial for building trust with participants and ensuring the validity of the research findings .

The independent variable in the study is social media use, specifically the time spent and type of social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, TikTok). The dependent variable is the English communication skills of Grade 7 students, including writing, speaking, and grammar. These variables are significant because they provide a structured way to investigate the causal relationships and influences between students’ social media habits and their language proficiency .

Local studies in the Philippines, such as those by Cruz and Santos (2020) and Garcia (2021), align with international research by highlighting that social media enhances fluency and confidence. However, they also point out the negative aspect of informal language habits impairing formal grammar, similar to findings by Al Ghazali (2020). Both local and international studies caution against the informal language on social media undermining students' formal writing skills .
