Simple Random Sampling Explained

Simple random sampling is a method of selecting a small segment of individuals from a larger population, giving each member an equal chance of being chosen. The process involves listing the population, assigning unique numbers, and using random methods for selection, ensuring fairness and reducing bias. This technique is convenient and can be executed through various methods such as random number generators or physical lottery methods.

Simple random sampling

Simple random sampling is the randomized selection of a small segment of individuals

or members from a whole population. It provides each individual or member of a population
with an equal and fair probability of being chosen. The simple random sampling method is one
of the most convenient and simple sample selection techniques.

Types of SRS:
● Random Lottery
● Physical Methods
● Random Number Table
● Online Random Number Generator
● Random Number from Excel

Example:

A school principal wants to survey students about their satisfaction with the school
cafeteria. There are 500 students in the school. The principal decides to select a sample of 50
students using simple random sampling.

a). Describe the steps the principal should take to ensure a proper simple random sample.
b). Explain why this method ensures fairness in the selection process.

a) Steps for Simple Random Sampling:

1. List the Population – The principal creates a complete list of all 500 students in the
school.
2. Assign Numbers – Each student is assigned a unique number from 1 to 500.
3. Random Selection – The principal uses one of the following random methods to select
50 students:
○ A random number generator (e.g., using a computer or calculator).
○ Drawing numbers from a box (lottery method).
4. Conduct the Survey – The 50 randomly chosen students are surveyed about their
cafeteria satisfaction.

b) Why This Method Ensures Fairness:

● Each student has an equal chance of being selected, reducing bias.
● The selection is random, meaning it is not influenced by personal preferences or
patterns.
● The results can be considered representative of the overall student population.
