Welcome to the TLE 10 Module on Using Tools in Adobe Photoshop!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by teachers

of Pagadian City Science High School to assist and helping the learners meet the
standards set by Department of Education while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration
their needs and circumstances.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.

Photoshop!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities
for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

In this module, you’ll learn how to identify different tools inside tools panel,
describe the uses of each tools, select and use some of the tools in Tools panel. This
lesson will take about four hours to complete.
After going through this module, you are expected to describe each tool and their
uses/functions and able to select and use a tool from tools panel.

 What’s New

Photoshop provides an integrated set of tools for producing sophisticated

graphics for print, web, and mobile viewing. We could easily fill the entire book with
details on the wealth of Photoshop tools and tool configurations. While that would
certainly be a useful reference, it’s not the goal of this book. Instead, you’ll start gaining
experience by configuring and using a few tools on a sample project. Every lesson will
introduce you to more tools and ways to use them. By the time you finish all the lessons
in this book, you’ll have a solid foundation for further explorations of the Photoshop
toolset.

The Tools panel is the long, narrow panel on the far left side of the work area. It
contains selection tools, crop and slices tools, measuring tools, retouching tools, painting
tools, drawing and type tools, navigation and 3D and viewing tools.

Read the information below.

A. Selection Tools
 Move Tool - allows you to move a selection or entire layer by dragging it with
your mouse or using your keyboard arrows keys.
 Rectangular Marquee Tool - is the default selection setting. It allows you to
select regions in your image to alter, copy, move and apply filters. You can
make a selection of any rectangular size and shape.
 Elliptical Marquee Tool - is available when you click and hold down
on the selection tool region of the tool bar, selects elliptical spaces. To
select a round area, hold the shift key while clicking and dragging.
 Single Column Marquee - is a tool that will select a 1pixel region that
is as tall as your image. Similar to single row tool, this is also very useful
for trimming edges and making straight lines.
 Single Row Marquee - is a tool that will select a 1pixel region that is
as wide as your image. This is very useful for trimming edges and
making straight lines.

 Lasso Tool - are similar to the marquee tools, except that the lasso tools give
you ultimate freedom in terms of the shape of your selection.
 Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) - helps you create a selection composed of
straight lines that can be as short as one pixel. The selection grows with
each additional click. This tool is especially useful for cutting out objects
in an image to place on new backgrounds.
 Magnetic Lasso (L) - works a little like a combination of the other two
lasso tools. As you drag, the selection maps to natural borders in the
image. This is a useful tool when dealing with well-defined and high-
contrast images.
 Quick Selection (W) - You can use the Quick Selection tool to quickly "paint"
a selection using an adjustable round brush tip. As you drag, the selection
expands outward and automatically finds and follows defined edges in the
image.
 Magic Wand (W) - lets you select a consistently colored area (for
example, a red flower) without having to trace its outline. You specify
the selected color range, or tolerance, relative to the original color you
click.

B. Crop and slice tools

 Crop (C) - works similarly to the Rectangular Marquee tool. The difference is
when you press the [Enter/Return] key it crops your image to the size of the
box. Any information that was on the outside of the box will be gone. However,
it is not permanent, you can still undo.
 Slice (C) - allows you to divide an image into smaller sections which fit
together like a jigsaw (but with straight edges).

  Slice Select (C) - enables you to divide an image into smaller areas
which fit together like a jigsaw (but with straight sides). The slice tool
lies in the top section of the Photoshop Toolbox.

C. Measuring Tools
 Eyedropper Tool (I) - takes color samples from colors on the page and
displays them in the Color Boxes. It works by changing your foreground color
to whatever color you click on. Holding the [Alt] key will change your
background color.
 Color Sampler (I) - allows you to view color values in defined spots of
your image.
 Ruler (I) - lets you measure distances and angles in an image.
 Note (I) –you can use this tool to add text notes to a file in Photoshop.
 Count (I) - is only found in the extended version of Photoshop. Its main
use is in areas such as scientific and medical imaging, where it is useful
for recording the number of items that appear in a particular image.

D. Retouching tools
 Spot Healing Brush (J) - The spot healing brush is the default healing tool in
Photoshop and can be used to clone areas from an image and blend the pixels
from the sampled area seamlessly with the target area. The basic principle is
that the texture from the sample area is blended with the color and luminosity
surrounding wherever you paint.
 Healing Brush (J) - allows you to fix image imperfections such as
scratches, blemishes, etc. By sampling the surrounding area or using a
predefined pattern you can blend the imperfections into the rest of the
image.
 Patch (J) - is primarily used to repair larger areas of an image, or get
rid of any distractions or blemishes.
 Red Eye (J) - is an easy-to-use tool for removing red eye from
photographs that have been taken with a direct flash source.
 Clone Stamp (S) - selects and samples an area of your picture and then uses
these pixels to paint over any marks.
 Pattern Stamp (S) - paints with a pattern defined from your image,
another image, or a preset pattern.
 Eraser (E) - is basically a brush which erases pixels as you drag it across the
image.
 Background Eraser Tool(E) - erases pixels on a layer to transparency
as you drag. You can erase the background while maintaining the
edges of an object in the foreground.
 Magic Eraser Tool (E) - functions the same way as the Magic Wand
selection tool, except that instead of selecting an area, it erases it.
 Blur Tool - blurs the sharp edges of an image. Click and drag the brush along
the edges.
 Sharpen Tool - increases the contrast among adjacent pixels to give
the illusion that things are sharper.

  Smudge Tool - allows you to mix or blend the content in an area of
your image.
 Dodge Tool (O) - is not as crappy as the car brand. It is actually used to lighten
whatever area you use it on as long as it is not an absolute black. Absolute
black cannot be lightened.
 Burn Tool - darken areas of the image.
 Sponge Tool - retouching tool used to alter the saturation of a portion
of an image.

E. Painting tools
 Brush Tool (B) - allows you to paint on any layer, much like a real paintbrush.
 Pencil Tool (B) - is limited to hard brush tips of any size or shape, and
creates freeform lines using the current foreground color.
 Color Replacement Tool (B) - allows you to colorize by replacing
original color of an image with the foreground color.
 Mixer Brush Tool (B) - allows you to paint more realistically in
Photoshop. With the mixer brush you can mix colors together as you
paint, picking up color samples from the image you are painting on and
set the rate at which the brush picks up paint from the canvas and the
rate at which the paint dries out.
 History Brush Tool (Y) - uses a previous state or snapshot of an image.
 Art History Brush Tool (Y) - paints with stylized strokes, using the
source data from a specified history state or snapshot.
 Gradient Tool (G) - creates a gradual blend between multiple colors.
 Paint Bucket Tool (G) - fills an area of an image based on color
similarity. Click anywhere in the image and the paint bucket will fill an
area around the pixel you clicked.

F. Drawing and Type tools

 Pen Tool (P) - is a path creator. You can create smooth paths that you can
stroke with a brush or turn to a selection. This tool is effective for designing,
selecting smooth surfaces, or layout.
 Freeform Pen Tool (P) - enables easy drawing vector shapes and
paths (shape outlines) by automatically adding anchor points. To draw
vector shape layers, click button. To draw paths (shape outlines) click
button.
 Add Anchor Point Tool – to add anchor point to its direction point to
reshape line.
 Delete Anchor Point Tool – to delete anchor point to its direction point
to reshape line.
 Convert Point Tool - edits existing vector shape masks and paths
(shape outlines) by converting smooth anchor points to corner anchor
points and vice versa.
 Horizontal Type Tool (T) - creates and edits vector-based text in a separate
layer horizontally.

  Vertical Type Tool (T) - creates and edits vector-based text in a separate
layer vertically.
 Horizontal Type Mask Tool (T) - utilized to mask the background
picture into the text typed horizontally.
 Vertical Type Mask Tool (T) - utilized to mask the background picture
into the text typed vertically.
 Path Selection Tool (A) - is used to select and move Paths. Paths can be
created with the Pen Tool.
 Direct Selection Tool (A) - selects and moves existing path's / vector shape
mask's segments / anchor points.
 Rectangle Tool (U) - creates rectangular shapes and paths (shape outlines).
 Rounded Rectangle Tool (U) - creates rectangular shapes and paths
(shape outlines) with rounded corners.
 Ellipse Tool (U) - creates elliptical shapes and paths (shape outlines).
 Polygon Tool (U) - creates polygonal shapes and paths (shape
outlines).
 Line Tool (U) - is used to draw straight lines on the canvas.
 Custom Shape Tool (U) - allow you to add graphic shapes in the form
of a filled layer with a vector mask, a solid fill, or as a path outline. Using
the shape tools, you can draw rectangular, rounded rectangular,
elliptical, polygon, line or custom shapes.
