Every word, and every syllable within a word, must have a vowel
sound, otherwise we would not be able to say or hear words
clearly at all. – Lyn Stone linguist & literacy specialist
We’re going to look at the 20 sounds and how these sounds are
spelt. *Be careful though some letters and letter patterns can make
different sounds and are in more than one of the groups.

The “schwa” vowel sound occurs in unstressed syllables. You never stress it.
We say it at the beginning, middle or end of words.

There are quite a lot of English vowel sounds and it’s up to you
to keep listening and distinguishing the individual sounds and
their patterns.
It’s all about getting your ears attuned to the sounds and
putting the patterns to the sounds, so don’t get stressed if you
can’t hear the different sounds.
