Special word order: inversion

Complete the tasks below.

1. State whether the sentences below display inversion (I), show normal word order (N) or are
wrong (W).

a. Seldom had she felt such terror.

b. Hardly had I arrived when the problems began.

c. I had no sooner unpacked than the telephone rang.

d. Not only they refuse to pay taxes; they also reject the authority of the state.

e. Little did they know what was about to happen.

f. At no time did she contact the police.

g. I did not try to influence him in any way.

h. Under no circumstances I will apologise.

i. Never again would he believe a politician’s promises.

j. Sometimes had I felt so frightened before.

2. Rewrite the sentences so that they are no longer inverted.
