412. GARBAGE Regulation

Every ship of 12m or more in length overall

1. Display Placards which notify Crew and passengers for discharge requirements.
2. Placards shall be written with both Flag Stage Language and English.
3. Every ship of 100 GT and above and minimum 15 persons must be provide
 Garbage management plan

1) Minimizing

2) Collection

3) Storing /processing

4) Disposing of garbage

5) Use equipment onboard.


4. Every ship of 400 GT and above, 15 or more persons

1) Garbage Record Book (2 years)


(a) Garbage Management Plan

 A garbage management plan is a complete guideline which comprise of a written


procedures for collecting, storing, processing and disposing of garbage generated
onboard ship as per regulation provided in Annex V of MARPOL.
(b) Organize crew

 To control the garbage disposal into sea, Senior Engineer should organize the engine
room crew as follows:
 Give instructions to be followed regarding garbage disposal regulation.
 Let them clearly understand the placards of the garbage, procedures of collecting,
storing, processing, disposing of garbage and using of equipment fitted onboard.
 Instruct them to minimize garbage production
 Marked containers to be placed in E/R workshop and other working spaces to keep
segregated garbage.
 Do not let them dispose any type of garbage without C.E approval.
 Sludge, waste oil, oily rags and plastic etc, to be incinerated properly.
 Ashes to be retained on board and transfer to shore reception facilities, when
available.
