FIGURE OF SPEECH
1. Objectives
What students will know:
define and identify the commonly used figure of speech
understand the effect of figures of speech on language and literature
What students will be able to do:
identify and analyze the use of figures of speech in poems, songs, and everyday
language
create their own sentences and short poems using different figures of speech.
Explain the impact of figures of speech on the reader or listener.
2. Materials
Whiteboard/Projector
Marker/Pens
Handouts with examples and exercises
Extra papers for group activities
3. Procedure
A. Introduction (5-10 minutes)
Begin with a picture that shows figure of speech
Example: 2 same pictures but different in color
Ask students to share their initial analyzation:
What did they notice about the 2 pictures? Did it look equal or not?
Briefly introduce the concept of figures of speech as a way to make language more vivid
and expressive.
B. Direct Instruction: (10-15 minutes)
Focus on one figure of speech at a time:
Simile: Define (comparison using “like” or “as”). Provide clear examples (He is strong like a
lion.)
Metaphor: Define (direct comparison without using “like” or “as”). Provide clear examples
(She is a star in a sky.)
Personification: Define (giving human qualities to non-human things). Provide clear
examples (The moon is smiling at me.)
Hyperbole: (exaggeration for effect) Provide clear examples (I have million thins to do.)
Use clear definitions, real-world examples, and visual aids to explain each figure of speech.
C. Guided Practice (10-15 minutes)
Teacher-led activities:
Have students work in group to create poems, song and short story using a figure of
speech.
Use think-pair-share to discuss the effect of a particular figure of speech in a given
example.
D. Independent Practice (5-10 minutes)
Student-centered Activities:
Distribute worksheets with exercises identifying and analyzing figures of speech.
E. Closure (5-10 minutes)
Summarize the key concepts of figures of speech.
Ask students to reflect on how figures of speech can make language more interesting
and impactful.
Briefly discuss the connection between figures of speech and creative writing.
4. Assessment
Class Participation: Observe student engagement and responses during discussions.
Worksheet Completion: Evaluate student understanding through worksheet exercises.
5. Differentiation
Provide different levels of worksheet: Offer easier versions for struggling students and more
