Web Publishing and Browsing
Web Publishing
Web publishing is the process of publishing original content on the Internet.
The process includes building and uploading websites, updating the associated webpages, and
posting content to these webpages online. Web publishing comprises of personal, business, and
community websites in addition to e-books and blogs.
The content meant for web publishing can include text, videos, digital images, artwork, and other
forms of media.
Publishers must possess a web server, a web publishing software, and an Internet connection
to carry out web publishing.
Web publishing is also known as online publishing.
SGML
Standard generalized markup language (SGML) is a text markup language that serves as a
superset of widely used markup languages like HTML (hypertext markup language) and XML
(extensible markup language).
SGML is used for marking up documents and has the advantage of not being dependent on a
specific application. It is derived from GML (generalized markup language), which allowed users
to work on standardized formatting styles for electronic documents.
Another important characteristic of standard generalized markup language is its use of document
types, and subsequently it use of document type definition (DTD). A particular document type is
expected to have specific parts and a specific structure. For example, when there is a DTD for
a report, the portions and structure of the document should follow what is defined in the DTD for
it to be considered a report. One major benefit is that documents with the same type can be
processed uniformly by all software capable of processing them.
Web hosting
When a hosting provider allocates space on a web server for a website to store its files, they are
hosting a website. Web hosting makes the files that comprise a website (code, images, etc.)
available for viewing online. Every website you’ve ever visited is hosted on a server.
The amount of space allocated on a server to a website depends on the type of hosting. The
main types of hosting are shared, dedicated, VPS and reseller. They are differentiated by the
kind of technology used for the server, the level of management provided and the additional
services on offer.
HTML
HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language
HTML is the standard markup language for Web pages
HTML elements are the building blocks of HTML pages
HTML elements are represented by <> tags
CGL
The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) provides the middleware between WWW servers and
external databases and information sources. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) defined
the Common Gateway Interface (CGI) and also defined how a program interacts with a Hyper
Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) server. The Web server typically passes the form information to
a small application program that processes the data and may send back a confirmation
message. This process or convention for passing data back and forth between the server and
the application is called the common gateway interface (CGI).
Features of CGI:
• It is a very well defined and supported standard.
• CGI scripts are generally written in either Perl, C, or maybe just a simple shell script.
• CGI is a technology that interfaces with HTML.
• CGI is the best method to create a counter because it is currently the quickest
• CGI standard is generally the most compatible with today’s browsers
Documents Interchange Standards
Documents may be transmitted in a revisable form that allows them to be read and edited on different
systems, or they may be transmitted in a final form that permits reading but not alteration. Standard
Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is an example of a document interchange standard that can be
used to create and share revisable documents. A commercial word processing format may also support
document interchange through the use of a proprietary standard, such as WordPerfect. Adobe PDF is an
example of a final form document interchange format.
Components of Web Publishing
There are basically five phases in web publishing as follows-
• Domain name planning and registration
• Web hosting
• Web design and development
• Promotion
• Maintenance
Document management
Document management is a system or process used to capture, track and store electronic
documents such as PDFs, word processing files and digital images of paper-based
content. According to the Association for Intelligent Information Management, document
management software “incorporates document and content capture, workflow, document
repositories, output systems and information retrieval systems. Also, the processes used to
track, store and control documents.” (1)
Document management can save an organization time and money. It provides benefits such as
document security, access control, centralized storage, audit trails and streamlined search and
retrieval.

HTTP
HTTP means HyperText Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and
this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web
servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.
