Gamow Theory of Alpha Decay Analysis

The document is a tutorial on nuclear physics covering various topics related to radioisotopes, including definitions of half-life and mean life, methods to measure half-life, and the derivation of the unit curie. It also discusses radiation units, alpha decay processes, and calculations related to kinetic energy and probabilities of decay. Additionally, it includes problems involving the estimation of half-lives and preformation probabilities of alpha particles.

Nuclear Physics

Tutorial-6

1. Explain the meaning of half-life and mean life for radioisotopes.

2. The radio-isotope 85-Br of a beta emitter with half-life of 1.8 x 104 seconds. Describe the
experiment to measure its half-life in laboratory using a G. M. counting system.
3. Explain how the unit curie was derived from the radioisotope Ra-226.
4. Estimate the activity in the unit of Curie (Ci) of 100 mg of a radio-isotope having half-life
of 5580 years.
5. Estimate the half-life of Cf-252 source if 100 mg weight of Cf-252 shows an activity of 54
milli-Curie.
6. Define the following radiation units
(i) Roentgen ii) RAD iii) GRAY(G)
7. Find out the classically forbidden regions in a potential of nuclei’s 238-U and 228-U which
emits alpha particles of 4.27 MeV and 6.81 MeV energies, respectively.

8. The effect of centrifugal barrier in addition to coulomb barrier reduces the probability of
alpha decay. Obtain the approximate value of centrifugal barrier for 238
94𝑃𝑢 𝛼 − 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑦 to
rd + 238
3 excited state (6 ) of 92𝑈 . Compare it with coulomb barrier. Draw the two barrier
potentials and show the barrier heights schematically.

9. For the following alpha decay process, 241 237 4

95𝐴𝑚 → 93𝑁𝑝 + 2𝐻𝑒 + 𝑄(5.486 𝑀𝑒𝑉), find
out the kinetic energy of 𝛼-particle and get the value of Gamow factor (Use the
approximated expression of Gamow factor derived in class)?

10. Estimate the probability value for an 𝛼 − 𝑑𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑦 from the coulomb barrier of 241 95𝐴𝑚 in
the above reaction. (Neglect the pre-formation probability of the alpha particle in the parent
nuclei.)

11. Determine the attempts an 𝛼-particle makes per unit time to come out of the potential
barrier of reaction given in problem no.2. (Neglect the pre-formation probability of the
alpha particle in the parent nuclei.)

12. Using the values obtain in problem no. 9 and problem no. 10, obtain the half-life of
radioactive nuclei 241
95𝐴𝑚 .

13. If the calculated half-life (obtained in the above problem) becomes equal to the measured
value of half-life 432.2 years, then what would be the preformation probability of alpha
particle in the parent nuclei?
