Spur Gear Analysis and Calculations

The document outlines a series of problems related to spur gears, including calculations for the number of teeth, diametral pitch, and various dimensions associated with gear design. Specific problems involve determining gear teeth counts based on speed ratios, calculating diametral pitch for meshing gears, and analyzing the dimensions and potential interference of a spur pinion and gear. The document serves as an exercise in gear nomenclature and force analysis for engineering students.

Problem No. 1 (5 points)

Two 8P gears are to be mounted on a center distance of 16 in. The speed ratio is 7: 9.
Find the number of teeth in each gear. Ans. 112 and 144

Problem No. 2 (5 points)

A 16-tooth module 4 pinion meshes with a 64-tooth gear. Find the diametral pitch.
Ans. 6.35

Problem No. 3 (5 points)

A 20- tooth 5P pinion meshes with a 63-tooth gear. Find the value of the standard
center distance.
Problem No. 4 (25 points)

A 21-tooth spur pinion mates with a 28-tooth gear. The diametral pitch is 3 teeth/in
and the pressure angle is 20◦. Find and tabulate the following results: the addendum,
dedendum, clearance, circular pitch, tooth thickness, space width, backlash, whole depth,
working depth, pitch circle diameters, addendum circle diameters, dedendum circle
diameters and base-circle diameters. Also determine whether there is interference if
standard full depth teeth are used. What is the contact ratio avoiding interference? Note:
Use Backlash = 0.035/Pitch
