ASSIGNMENT
My Commitment to Protecting the Environment

As a student, reflecting on What is Happening to Our Beautiful


Land? by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines or CBCP, I
realize the severity of environmental destruction in the Philippines and
my role as a student in addressing it. The letter emphasizes concerning
problems such deforestation that leads to soil erosion, loss of
biodiversity, and increased vulnerability to natural disasters, marine
damage, air pollution, soil pollution, water pollution, and climate
change that all jeopardize the natural resources of the nation and the
welfare of next generations. Though I am not personally implicated in
major environmental damage, I admit that my daily choices such as
too much plastic use, high energy use, and reliance on unsustainable
products—add to these issues.
Apart from personal decisions, I also notice how governmental
and financial systems affect environmental problems. Government
policies often prioritize short-term profits over sustainability, while
corporate interests exploit natural resources, leaving marginalized
communities vulnerable. Poverty also drives many Filipinos to
participate in destructive activities include fishery for survival and
illegal forestry. Being a student, I feel compelled to act beginning with
little but significant changes like bringing reusable bags or ecobags
when going to market, recycling bottles, and utensils which helps me
to reduce plastic waste by avoiding single-use plastics. Another action
is to plant trees and care for them until they grow enough to be self
sustainable. Though my efforts might seem little, they can have a
domino effect encouraging others to preserve and take care of our
surroundings.
